Super Strong El Niño Set to Bring Wetter Than Normal Rains to Sri Lanka 🌧️

🌊 The current El Niño is already very strong, with Pacific waters running about +2.6°C above average and more than 90% chance it becomes one of the most intense events since 1950.

📍 Typical El Niño rainfall maps show mixed global patterns, yet Sri Lanka sits in a zone expected to turn wetter than normal, especially from October onward.

☔ Department of Meteorology outlooks point to above-average rainfall in October and November, raising the chance of heavy showers and localised flooding.

📅 October-November normally deliver around 30% of Sri Lanka’s yearly rain, so extra moisture could quickly fill reservoirs and low-lying areas.

⚠️ Authorities and communities are being urged to stay prepared as the wet season arrives under this powerful El Niño influence.

Sweden granted citizenship to just 98 people in July out of 2,825 citizenship cases concluded during the month, meaning approvals amounted to only around 3.5% of concluded cases.

In a dramatic reversal from previous trends, the majority of those granted Swedish citizenship were citizens of Finland, Norway and Denmark.

July was the first full month under Sweden’s new, significantly tougher citizenship rules, which came into force on June 6.

The reforms increase the standard residency requirement from 5 to 8 years and introduce requirements covering self-sufficiency, Swedish-language skills, knowledge of Swedish society and an orderly life.

🇱🇰 Army Commander Lt. Gen. Nilantha Premaratne paid tribute to the parents of late Corporal S.V.A.M. Pushpamal, who was posthumously awarded the Param Weera Vibhushanaya, Sri Lanka’s highest military decoration for valour.

Corporal Pushpamal of the 2nd Commando Regiment was 22 when he lost his life during an operation to rescue civilians in Puthumathalan on April 21, 2009.
