One synth I never thought would be great for cinematic and ambient sound is the mellotron. I was familiar with Apple's take on it, which is rubbish, but GForce Software created a true replica in plugin format. I reviewed that one here:

A synthesizer for cinematic and ambient is the Oddity 3. It's based on the Oddissey, an analogue synth of the 70s-80s. I loved this one, although it was getting used to the controls that match the real thing...

This plugin combines multiple effects into one that is equipped with a giant macro button or an LFO. It's quite good to have this in your tool chest as a sound designer.
