I'm 37 years old, a father of 4, a Service Reliability Engineer with many years of experience behind me. I'd like to point out that I have just missed my mouth whilst drinking coffee and poured more down my front than I got in my mouth. Don't let imposter syndrome get you down.
Survived a pulmonary embolism this last week, it was a bad one and given I’d been so ill before it didn’t dawn on me how unwell I was. Thanks to the NHS and a stay in hospital (with bed rest) I’m ever grateful for my tax money at work.
Now I’m home, recovering.
@davidfowl@Dave_DotNet For backend services it takes a matter of hours to upgrade and validate, for Blazor we've been bitten a few times by upgrades - we use wasm and we've just kept rescheduling the upgrades.
I'm pretty sure the upgrade path is better now, but the problem is once bitten, twice shy!
Some thoughts on the discourse around @Railway team's outage. I was a mid-level SE at @datadoghq ANZ in 2023 when the company had a major, long lasting outage (actually started while I was mid demo). I was in a sales role, and what was most interesting to me was the response from customers after the incident was resolved.
A lot of small, smb and commercial customers were livid, demanding compensation, being a bit rude to staff etc. However, most the large enterprises and massively scaled orgs were annoyed, sure, but mainly just wanted to be spoken to throughout the process, and informed of how it happened, as they wanted to ensure it didn't happen to them as well.
I don't think expecting your provider to never have an outage is feasible, but expecting them to communicate well throughout is how you can differentiate between your options. FWIW $DDOG is up 3x since that outage.
Every stage of the traditional SDLC is collapsing, except monitoring. And monitoring needs to evolve.
Observability becomes the feedback mechanism that drives the entire loop...the connective tissue of the whole system. 🙌

@vyrotek Yes, we've built a fair few services with it. Would summarise when it works well, its excellent. When it doesn't, you end up with an endpoint called /api/features123 because for no apparent reason in a single app /api/features won't work and you stick on the 123 just to test

After two years of secrecy, and four months of gradually pulling aside the curtain, we are just 13 days from the release of BABYLON 5: THE ROAD HOME, our love letter to Babylon 5 fans and its cast of characters. Can't wait for this beast to escape into the world.
Desk tidied, new Monitor, Microphone and Headphones arriving later today.
I can promise you this is not how my desk has been for the last few months, I'm certain it will remain clear for at least one day. Mainly as I'm heading to the Office for a rare in person dat tomorrow.
If you're SRE or SRE-adjacent, it would be great to spend some time filling out https://t.co/Hjd085lP8u -- one of the few ways we can get cross-company readings on what's happening with the profession.
Thank you for your time in advance!
