PRACTICE MAKES PERMANENT
The saying goes, "practice makes perfect," but perfection only comes if you learn it right in the first place. Once that foundation is in place, practice serves two key purposes: to prevent forgetting and to build fluency.

1. If we don't want students to forget what they've learnt, then we need to provide retrieval practice opportunities that are spaced out over time. Each time a concept is recalled, the schema's strengthen. But to make this effective, we aim for the "sweet spot" of desirable difficulties—pushing students just enough to think hard when recalling concepts. This effortful retrieval makes learning stick.

2. Fluency is crucial because it reduces the extraneous load on working memory, allowing students to focus on solving complex problems. In mathematics, for instance, fluency with basic facts frees up mental capacity for higher-order thinking. To measure and improve this, timing students can be invaluable. Digits Correct Per Minute is a great way to measure this.

If you want kids to learn about real-life finance at school and have them understand budgets and taxes and mortgages, by all means use Martin Lewis’s textbook and wrap everything up in a Level 1 or 2 qualification, but please don’t hijack GCSE Maths to do it
