अवध के नवाबों ने भारत पर शासन करने वाली ईस्ट इंडिया कंपनी के पास रक़म जमा कराई थी या क़र्ज़ दिए थे. रकम देने के बदले शर्त ये थी कि उस पर मिलने वाला ब्याज उनके ख़ानदान और उनसे जुड़े लोगों को पेंशन की शक्ल में दिया जाएगा. इस पेंशन को ही वसीका कहते हैं. सन् 1857 की लड़ाई के बाद 1874 में ईस्ट इंडिया कंपनी बंद हो गई. सात दशक बाद 1947 में भारत आज़ाद हुआ. अंग्रेज़ चले गए, मगर यह परंपरा आज भी जारी है.

Have you noticed Delhi journalists praising fellow journalists?
Rarely. We don’t praise it, normally.
I suspect it’s due to professional jealousy.
We report politicians day and night and blame them for their ego and what not but we are no less ‘diplomatic’ in our offices and in our public conduct.
In last 35 years I have rarely found a journalist who don’t envy success and talent of fellow editors and reporters. When editors do praise some reporters it’s mostly part of politics of favouritism.
Of course, few exceptions are there in our profession too. But, largely, we are acutely short of words in praising members of our own fraternity.
Due to high envy quotient in media so many reporters in regional India remain unsung.
My favourite reporter on TV is Ruchi Kumar of @indiatvnews .
She is sensible and steady. Not at all verbose. In PtoC she talks about facts of the story.
She doesn’t do chamchagiri of netas on camera. Just regular reporting.
You won’t see her attempting to impress viewers unnecessarily. She underplays her stories.
Full marks for so many years of uninterrupted reporting without getting national recognition. It’s easy to be investigative journalist, analysts, columnists or a celebrity anchor on @YouTube .
It’s very difficult to be a professional journalist and report news cycle, for decades, without making mistakes.
When I watch her report I would like to believe it.
I don’t know her, personally.

Honoured to have been asked to speak at the second death anniversary function of my old NDTV colleague and friend Kamal Khan. When the history of tv journalism in this country is written, Kamal will stand out as someone who gave Hindi news TV reporting a unique identity. Very few, if any, have surpassed Kamal in the use of language with a sharp knowledge of UP’s society and politics. If only there was a Time Machine, we could be transported to an era when news was not noise and Kamal Khan reporting from Lucknow was a symbol of a journalism of sense not sensation. We miss him🙏
