Food Corporation of India (FCI) sold rice to ethanol distilleries at just ₹2,250–2,320 per quintal between June 2025 and June 2026 around 40% below its own average procurement cost of ₹3,720–3,889 per quintal.
In just one year, 6.35 million tonnes of rice worth ₹14,596.78 crore were dispatched from FCI warehouses to ethanol plants.
At the same time, the Centre has imposed stock limits on sugar dealers as sugar prices continue to rise.
If food grains are being sold below cost for ethanol production while taxpayers absorb the losses, how exactly is the government claiming that ethanol blending is saving money? Who is bearing the subsidy, and where are the actual savings?
