Yesterday, on my way home from the airport, I ordered a cab and immediately noticed something unusual: the driver had a portable @SafaricomPLC 5G router in the car.

As I settled in, he welcomed me, confirmed my destination, then continued with his call.

Meanwhile, I was busy “sizing and weighing” him to establish whether he was the chatty type or whether we would observe silence until the destination. 😄

When he finished the call, he opened with the most Kenyan conversation starter:

“Hii Nairobi ni joto, mara baridi. Penye unatoka kukoje?”

After exchanging weather reports, I finally asked the question that had been burning since I entered the car:

“Naona wewe umejipanga na internet?”

His face lit up.

He explained that he loves playing music videos while working. A KSh100 bundle could take him through the day on the cab app, but it was not enough for music, social media and keeping up with what was happening during the hours when he had no customers.

On some days, he would spend about KSh300 on data. That is roughly KSh9,000 a month.

He did the maths and bought the router.

Now, he pays KSh2,999 monthly, stays connected throughout the day and enjoys his music without checking whether his bundles are breathing their last breath.

The Safaricom 5G router has also become part of his customer service.

When he picks up visitors from the airport who do not have Kenyan SIM cards, he gives them access to his Wi-Fi. They can contact their hotels, reach the people receiving them and make online payments.

He even recalled losing payment from a foreign passenger before he bought the router. The customer could not complete a mobile transfer, and his phone could not connect to the driver’s hotspot.

Before I could ask whether he ever followed up, we had arrived.

The internet is no longer just something people use to browse social media. It supports work, payments, entertainment, communication and even the customer experience.

The uses may differ, but affordable and portable internet is quietly changing how people work and move through everyday life in Kenya.

Sometimes, digital transformation is not a complex presentation in a boardroom. It is a 5G router sitting inside a cab.

There's an employer who was asked to pay a security guard Ksh 900,000 for unfair dismissal, in March 2025.

The employer was served and she never responded to court summons nor appeared before the court.

The security guard served her via WhatsApp and he presented the WhatsApp message as his evidence.

The court concluded that the WhatsApp grey ticks were a proof that she saw the court documents and deliberately decided not to respond nor defend the suit.

The pair of grey ticks on WhatsApp was used as evidence in the Employment and Labour Relations Court,

And she was asked to pay the former security guard KSh992,146.60 in compensation after the court found his dismissal unlawful and unfair.
