Me quedé quieto.

—¿Solo?
—Dice que su papá trabaja y su mamá viaja. Que él juega mientras espera que lleguen.

Manejé de vuelta a casa sin música.
Entré. Mi hijo estaba frente a la pantalla con audífonos.

Apagué el televisor.
Se dio vuelta asustado.

—¿Quieres jugar algo conmigo? —le pregunté.

Me miró como si le hubiera hablado en otro idioma.

—¿Tú? ¿Conmigo?
—Sí.
—¿No tienes trabajo?

Tenía once años y ya sabía que el trabajo siempre ganaba.

Jugamos dos horas esa tarde.
Me ganó cuatro veces.
Se rio como no lo escuchaba reír hace mucho.

Esa noche, cuando fui a apagar la luz, me preguntó:
—Papá, ¿mañana también juegas?
—Sí —le dije.

No sé si lo voy a cumplir siempre.
Pero sé que si no lo intento,
cuando sea grande no va a recordar que trabajé mucho.
