To the little Black boy from Helena, Alabama who used to write stories while Disney Channel playing in the background to drown out his parents fighting…
To the 17 year old LaDarrion who promised himself while reading Percy Jackson to write a story with a kid like…
To the 27 year old LaDarrion who was sleeping in his car and driving a Lyft and Uber and folks telling him “ a story about about a Black boy with magic is not really marketable”…
All I got to say is… you did it, kid.
Growing up in Alabama, my mama used to drag me to the hairshop every Saturday.
Who knew years later I would write a play about it.
I wrote this play to honor my mama, my aunties, all the women who used to go the beauty shop and get their strengths renewed.

So grateful that my play is the receipient of the 2026 LA New Play Project Award.
This grant will go toward paying Black creatives for their blood sweat and tears.
When I say there’s a renaissance happening here in LA. It’s happening.
When you plant the seed, the water will come.
I’ve put so much financially into this play because I believe in this play so much. Because the doors kept slamming in my face. But when you’re obedient to the calling, the doors will open and it will all come back to you.
I’m so honored that my play COCO QUEENS is the recipient of the 2026 LA New Play Project Award!
Won’t He do it?!!!
The roles exists and the scripts.
At the top of this year I decided to pour my personal funds from my book sales into creating a play where 4 Black actresses and a Black woman director who had doors closed in their faces. I’ve had many doors closed in mine.
We got tired of being told no and rejected. It’s scary. I’m scared everyday, but we chugging along.
