I think this tweet typifies the misunderstanding at the core of the disconnect between the Trump administration and Ukraine. Elon and co. are operating under the incorrect assumption that the Ukrainian war effort is doomed. The Ukrainians know they’re not doomed because they’re the ones who have actually been fighting the war and have a more realistic view of the battlefield situation. That’s why Trump keeps expecting them to cave to his demands and is surprised that they don’t. He is underestimating their position and overestimating Russia’s. Russia would need over 80 years to conquer the rest of Ukraine at the rate it’s advancing on the battlefield, according to ISW which means Russia is loosing the war of attrition through high casualties, not Ukraine. The Trump administration believes its own propaganda so much they backed the losing side.
