This feels particularly unfair, esp counting the Cameron transition. 7 PMs/16 years is more accurate. Also not counting Truss 🥬 we're an average of ~3 years. Which is just under the American model. Plus we're counting individual not party transitions.
We'll soon have the 7th Prime Minister in 10 years. It is the underlying special crisis of British capitalism which is driving political instability. The ruling class in incapable of re-establishing legitimacy for its governments.
@texasrunnerDFW@samdbtto So you're doing exactly what you should not do. Making conjectures and claims with no evidence. This is alarmism in the most definitional sense no?
@richmondie@Scholars_Stage But as what started this conversation we're not on topic. The issue here is how almost 60% of students do not employ the best reading techniques. But they *are* reading. And I think this paper even misses the real ways students use skills, albeit getting incorrect results
@richmondie@Scholars_Stage I don't see anywhere that you or Amis are experts in English education. If I am missing something please do share. Likewise, I read your most recent blog post. Are you not missing Mitzi's coding as Roma rather than Jewish? Again it's important to be specific in what we discuss.
@richmondie@Scholars_Stage I worry you're conflating a singular piece of anecdotal evidence (whose teaching stint seems minor at best) with the whole of the American Education system. Disregarding time, place, assessment, and culture. As I would tell my students... You made a claim. Now prove it.
@richmondie@Scholars_Stage I don't doubt you. But I don't quite understand your connection between a British novelist of the 60s and 70s and Kansas English majors in 2025. Could you please elaborate?
@richmondie@Scholars_Stage I don't believe I disagreed. But you should read the whole paper. That's how you strengthen your reading and writing skills.
@richmondie@Scholars_Stage Actually your response is emblematic of the full conclusion of the paper! Both you and the students are guessing at the meaning of a complicated, multifaceted work without actually taking the time to fully read through it. These kids did fully attempt it though.
I think a key part of this is that the "canon" isn't just Lit Hum from 1975. Classics should be expanded to include new areas and voices. Make a bigger well to draw references and commonality from.
Maybe I'm just being reactionary but I feel like it used to be more of a common aspiration to be "well read." In the sense of having read a good amount of the commonly agreed "canon" that everyone should be familiar with, in addition to pursuing your private reading interests
@MagicOnline@JooAfon58917647@fireshoes Howdy! I made my account yesterday not knowing the changes hadn't gone live. I only made the account for the new player decks. How can I flag my account for the caveat?
Hey @Amtrak@AmtrakAlerts people have been stuck at the Sacramento Valley station since 6:45 local time. No updates except a mechanic telling us to tweet y'all. What is happening?
