Here’s a thought that I’ve yet to see a single person even consider regarding the Cowboys vs. Lions referee debacle.

@jayfeely Why did the ref go to the Cowboys defense to inform them? Doesn’t the ref just turn on his mic and announce the # of the player who reported eligible? Or did they stop doing that? And if they stopped when did that change?
Here is what I think happened.
#68 Decker goes over to Brad Allen and says “reporting” while #70 Skipper is running toward them from the sideline.
Allen mistakenly thinks Decker is reporting for Skipper and tells the Cowboys #70 is reporting eligible. Hence the penalty
The #Lions are trying to run interference to make the #Cowboys think Skipper is running onto the field and reporting when in reality it’s Decker. Slow mo replay showed Skipper saying, “I didn’t say a f—ing word!” Clearly planned and practiced. Brad Allen announced Skipper though.
What’s lost here is what the cowboys were told, which is “70” is eligible. That matters how they lined up and defended. Why wasn’t a more formal announcement made? Then everyone would have been aware of the miscommunication.
Head ref Brad Allen told a pool reporter No. 70 Dan Skipper reported as eligible and No. 68 Taylor Decker did not.
Skipper and Jared Goff said postgame that the exact opposite happened.
