At Isa Wali Empowerment Initiative, we believe laws like the ACJL exist to protect the dignity of every individual. But they only work when people know about them, and when communities hold institutions accountable.
Have you ever seen or heard of “arrest in lieu” happening?
Have you ever heard of someone being arrested simply because the real suspect could not be found?
This practice is called “arrest in lieu.” It is arresting one person in place of another.
It is not only unjust, it is also illegal under the Administration of Criminal Justice Law (ACJL 2019).
Only the person accused of committing the offence can be arrested. Anything else violates their rights and undermines justice.
As we step into a new week, let’s pause to reflect on the power of our voices.
Our voices are more than expressions of our own thoughts; they can be bridges for those who do not yet have the courage, platform, or opportunity to speak.
Did you know?
If you’re ever arrested, you have the right to be told why.
Under the Kano State Administration of Criminal Justice Law (ACJL) 2019, the reason for your arrest must be clearly stated.
This protects you from abuse, restores dignity, and makes justice fairer.
Help us spread the word. Like, share, and repost this message so that more people become aware of their rights.
Together, we can make justice truly accessible.
Access to justice begins long before a courtroom appearance. It begins when one is invited by law enforcement officers for questioning or, when one is arrested.

Because rights mean little if people do not know they have them. And justice cannot serve the people if they do not know how to claim it.
This is why we do the work we do, to ensure that every person, no matter who they are, understands that the law protects them too.
Did you know?
You have a right to remain silent when you are arrested.
This is because whatever you say can and will be used against you in court.
