5 tricks to stop hitting Claude’s usage limits
Claude doesn’t count messages like ChatGPT does, it counts tokens and some conversations eat 10x more than others
So here’s what you should do instead:
🩷 Edit your prompt, don’t send a follow-up. Claude re-reads your entire conversation history every single time. When it misses the mark, click edit on your original message and regenerate. The old response gets replaced instead of added. Over 10 rounds, this alone cuts token use by 80-90%
🩷Start a new chat every 15-20 messages. Your first message costs about 200 tokens. By message 30, that same simple question costs 50,000+. So copy Claude’s summary, open a fresh chat and paste it in.
🩷 Use the right model for the job. Haiku for quick answers, brainstorming, grammar, formatting. Sonnet for content writing, analysis, coding. Opus for deep research and hard logic. Haiku all day for simple tasks frees up 50-70% of your budget for the work that actually needs the bigger models.
🩷 Set up memory and user preferences. Every conversation you start without context burns 3-5 setup messages just by re-explaining who you are. Go to settings -> memory and store it once - your role, your tone, your preferences. Claude carries it into every chat automatically.
🩷 Turn off features you’re not using. Web search, research mode, connectors. They all add tokens to every response even when you don’t need them. Extended thing is he same, leave it off by default and only switch it on when your first attempt wasn’t good enough.

On Monday, I was once asked to recommend someone for a customer support role.
I posted it in my community, and the responses were very impressive. One had worked at Airtel, one had worked at Access bank, and others had equally solid experience.
I reviewed their resumes and applications carefully, and narrowed it down to five people I genuinely believed in.
When I sent the list to the recruiter, they later reduced it to three, and that’s where things stalled.
Everyone left deserved the role, and none of the recruiters wanted to be the person to cut someone off.
Then a small detail came up. One résumé was saved as “my new resume.”
It felt insignificant at first, but it opened the door to questions. And once questions start, decisions become easier, even when they shouldn’t.
“New” compared to what?
“New” for which role?
And it just went on.
Little things like this feel small until they’re standing between you and an opportunity. Sometimes, that’s all it takes.
Please save your Resumes accordingly.
