How is women's equality connected to the health of a nation? Author of @doublexeconomy Linda Scott talks with Elle @J42doc about all the ways that sex inequality is a recipe for disaster, and how empowering women is always going to result in a more stable, prosperous economy. Honestly, we need to institute strict safeguarding measures around male doctors in pediatric and women’s medicine. No male of any position should ever be allowed to be alone in a room with children or women without a woman present, and always, always a family member.
They didn’t burn witches. They murdered women. Independent women. Assertive women. Intelligent women. Women who refused to be quiet. Women who refused to roll over. Women who refused to submit.
The most powerful speech on biological women’s rights has just been delivered tonight, in New Zealand ❤️❤️❤️
“It is misogyny in a modern form to deny our reality”
I feel hope at last. Take a listen
And to think Julia Gillard grandstands as an expert on misogyny 😳
Men trading in women is one of patriarchy’s main staples. It is so old a practice that it figures in our fairytales and our religions - and certainly in today’s millions of female slaves.
End men trading in women and we end patriarchy.
I have a friend with PTSD because he witnessed an Afghan man sell his daughter for a motorbike. The outrage is justified.
He had to watch the prick ride around on that bike for the rest of his tour.
We know there is an effort afoot in the US to force women back into the domestic sphere, but do the proponents of this plan grasp what they're wishing for?
Expert on women's economy and author of @doublexeconomy Linda Scott doesn't think so. Find our conversation at link in bio.
@diversepsyche I object to every word in your reply including “is” and “are”. Creating a baby is not “work” but rather a vital human function and experience. Humans do not typically sell our beings, but what we do. That is labor. We are much beyond workers, and our children are not products.
Disagree. Surrogacy is ethically straightforward, much in the way prostitution is ethically straightforward. It is commodification and exploitation of women, reducing women to “things” for rent or purchase. Women will never attain full humanity as long as these practices exist.
Surrogacy is incredibly ethically complicated and it would be a mistake for feminists to simply negatively polarize ourselves on it - i.e., the religious right is against it, therefore we are for it. A complex issue it's worth treating with care and nuance.
@PhilemonaLemon@labaadiabolique Right, but that would be your own embodied experience, not part of a transaction. Big difference.
There are a lot of ways to exert power aside from money.
@labaadiabolique@PhilemonaLemon Many arguments against this, chiefly: pregnancy is risky and unpredictable. You literally don’t know what you’re getting into. Two, there is always a power dynamic in human relationships and you can never be guaranteed purity of motive.
@LeeKurtiss I don’t need to know who I’m talking to, I’m simply responding to what you’re writing. Funny that sex and procreation are so far apart in your mind that they are now irrelevant to each other. You do know that babies are made by a man and a woman having sex most typically yea?
@LeeKurtiss This is the pro-sexploitation crowd’s favorite false equivalency. These two things are not the same and not comparable. Labor and sexual function are very different, one related to doing and the other to being. The fact that you can’t distinguish between them is a sad commentary.
Men rape in war.
This is Feminism 101.
If you are claiming that only 'the enemy's' men rape because 'the enemy' is uniquely savage and barbaric, that is not feminism, it is tribal patriarchal complicity.
MEN. Rape. In. War.
A surrogate is on life support.
There is a contract.
The commissioning parents decide how long her body is kept alive to complete the pregnancy, or to not complete it. They decide who lives and who dies and when.
Not her own family.
Her body is no longer under her control.
This is surrogacy.
@WomenReadWomen@DawnNoMikoto I cannot adequately express how grateful I am for the incredibly hard work you’re doing. This kind of betrayal and ostracizing is crushing and so very painful, but know that you also have many, many supporters who appreciate your sacrifices.
If women left the workforce they would be economically dependent on men again, which means they would have to go back to being treated however men decided to treat them with no way to escape it.
Men who hate that women have options don’t plan on treating women well.
Porn is what the end of the world looks like. Porn culture is when all morality is measured by the dowsing rod of men's erections. When police, teachers, judges, and lawyers, are ejaculating to images of women being choked, flogged, and bound.
Then, the ethics of male sexuality is cut loose by sadistic pornography, so that our measure of morality is based on the increasingly depraved abuse that makes men hard.
Liberal politics for the past several decades have followed the immoral compass of erections in nearly every policy that pertains to women.
Sex trafficking? We'll call it sex work, and if you say otherwise, you're a bigot. Women who are harmed and speak out? Shut up.
Pornography? We'll call it free speech, and if you talk about any of its harms, you're a bigot. Even when we know, and can see, that porn is visibly, emotionally, physically harming children.
Transgenderism? If men pretending to be women gives them an erection, and allows them access to spaces where women and children are naked and vulnerable, opposing that makes you a prude, a bigot, and a Nazi.
"Liberal feminism" has unfortunately become lumped together as ALL feminism, in a kind of historical amnesia, despite the centuries of history behind it which opposed the sex trafficking of women.
The dick was not always the dowsing rod, and erections are not a moral compass.
For women, current liberal politics are exactly that, and we can speak ad nauseam about the harms of the sex industry, porn - even how it harms men - and be called bigots for it, because the measure of morality, for liberal women who claim to be feminists, goes only as far as the measure of a man's pleasure. It's a depressing state of affairs.
US pronatalists are rolling out refurbished 'traditional family values' propaganda and hard-selling marriage and breeding to the next generation of women - who happen to be enjoying the greatest economic empowerment in human history. Link to my Substack in bio.
There is a lot that goes into the recruitment of women for surrogacy besides financial incentives - because, as recruiters well know - most women are powerfully motivated to help those in need and to prove that they are "good women".
Recruiters and "intended parents" often love-bomb a prospective surrogate mother, offering her belonging, appreciation, care and company. In latest ep The Empathy Trap, founder of @WombsNotForRent Lexi Ellingsworth talks with Elle about the act of seducing a woman into surrogate motherhood.
