We detailed the numerous health and safety problems that have occurred since the arrival of TransLink’s new contractor Dexterra Group, and in anticipation of the FIFA World Cup this summer. Meeting with Government officials is one thing, but we need people power. 2/3

It also allows them to evade their responsibilities under the Employment Standards Act, like paying a minimum wage, overtime pay, stat pay, vacation pay and other things that workers have fought for decades to secure as MINIMUM STANDARDS. 3/3

Today we rallied in Victoria to end the subcontracting scheme for cleaners in gov’t buildings!

Workers who clean BC Gov’t buildings are being squeezed by four levels of subcontracting. 1/3

As a result, cleaners have been coerced into self-incorporating and creating businesses of their own. This scheme allows companies to avoid their obligations like payroll taxes, CPP contributions and Employment Insurance premiums. 2/3

Over the Easter long weekend, workers ratified a new contract. The strike is cancelled.
The 2 year agreement has wage increases that reflect the city-wide industry standards of $1 increase per year, an enhanced health care spending account, and more!

We heard from Branch President Daniel Charlebois, spoke about solidarity with migrant workers, reviewed the new improvements to our benefits plan, and talked about recent changes to our collective agreement.

Yesterday, we had strike training and prepared for our strike at @McArthurGlenVan - a premier outdoor shopping centre near YVR.

We came together as unionized cleaners working for Dexterra + across multiple sites in Metro Vancouver to prepare to hit the picket lines.👊🏽🧹
