Every one of those vehicles is built on patents that expired 20+ years ago — designs that legally belong to all of us now. And one of them earned a 5-star crash-safety rating, so don't tell me it's about safety.

So here's the question that should make every American family furious: Why can't you buy any of them — at any price?

The Founders wrote the answer into the Constitution. Article I, Section 8, Clause 8 — the Patent Clause — grants inventors a monopoly for "limited Times," and not one day longer. When the term ends, the design enters the public domain, free for anyone to build. The Supreme Court has said so for more than a century — Singer, Scott Paper, Sears, Bonito Boats, and Kimble, which held that on expiration "the right to make or use the article, free from all restriction, passes to the public."

So the patents have expired. The designs are public domain. The Constitution says they're ours. We were legally able to remanufacture them prior to the 1970s too!

More than 90 countries let their citizens buy these new, affordable, patent-expired vehicles right now. We invented most of the underlying technology. And yet on this side of the border, the door is bolted shut.
