We have passed laws that make non-fatal strangulation a stand-alone criminal offence to make it clear this conduct is wrong and unacceptable.
I want to thank those affected by these acts of violence for their tireless advocacy, especially the loved ones of Joy Rowley.
Non-fatal strangulation is rarely an isolated event. It is often a concerning red flag, revealing an ongoing and escalating pattern of coercive and controlling behaviour – especially when it occurs in family violence circumstances.

Australia’s Emergency Management Ministers met in Brisbane today to further discuss preparations for this year’s high risk weather season & new ways to better support communities recovering from previous events. Thanks to colleagues for your strong collaboration.
Our firefighters don’t just drop everything to protect Victorians — they do it for the world.
After Canada sent support for the 2019/20 fires, we’re doing the same. 49 FFMVic & CFA members are now heading over to help fight wildfires.
Thank you to all of you — stay safe.
We won’t be rushed by those trying to score political points over this issue when they know fully well the work is underway. I invite the Greens to work with me and community groups on this reform instead of pulling further stunts for their own gratification.
The Greens don’t seem to understand that expanding anti-vilification law to protect LGBTIQ+ Victorians is more than a press release & a vague Bill. If you rush laws they can end up working against the people they’re meant to protect — it’s incredibly complex, hard and worthy work
Groups who are currently protected under the laws like the Islamic community have told us they’re not working – so while we work on expanding who’s protected, we’re also working on strengthening the protections they provide.
Emergency Services Minister @JaclynSymes joined us today to announce the activation of lifesaving services at four inland areas for tomorrow's public holiday. This is the first time such services will patrol these locations, in response to increased drownings at inland waterways.
Victorians are urged to stay safe around waterways this unofficial long weekend - Communications Officer Dan will be depolyed to @LifeSavingVic's Port Melbourne Communications Centre to provide real time incident intelligence to LSV patrols across Victoria https://t.co/KlCgyvfwSm
First total fire ban for 2023 will be in effect from 00:01 to 23:59 Monday 2 January for the Mallee Weather District. Severe Fire Dangers predicted time to put that bush fire plan into action!
Meet the newest member of the Melbourne Family Court team!
Lucy is helping support kids and adults as they give evidence, during hearings, interviews and more. 🐾♥️
Lucy can sit and stay - and bow her head for a judge.
That's because she's a full-time worker in Victoria's justice system.
And she's just started in Melbourne's Family Court.
I reckon we might need a bit more space than just Fed Square to watch the @Socceroos take on Argentina.
So we're going to open up AAMI Park and put the game on the big screens.
And it'll be completely free.
