From commitment to delivery. A partnership built across all shores of the Mediterranean. 🇪🇺
Today, we are setting in motion the first 21 concrete initiatives to drive forward the implementation of the Pact for the Mediterranean.
Five European nations have determined that Russia poisoned Alexei Navalny.
This was a cowardly act from a frightened leader.
Russia has long acted as a terrorist state, relying on terrorist methods.
Poisoning political opponents. Silencing journalists. Invading peaceful neighbours.
This is the true face of Russia today.
We honour the memory of Alexei Navalny and of all those whom Putin’s Russia has violently silenced over the years

Exclusive: The Trump administration is ramping up its efforts to deport people to other nations, filing almost 5,000 motions in November alone seeking to dismiss asylum cases and arguing that applicants can get asylum there. w/ @atmccann + @Haleaziz

I am honoured to have been elected as the incoming United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. As a former refugee, I know first-hand how protection and opportunity can change the course of a life. That experience will inform a leadership approach grounded in empathy, pragmatism, and a principled commitment to international law. My foremost responsibility will be to refugees and others forced to flee—upholding their rights and dignity and advancing durable solutions so that displacement remains a temporary situation, not a permanent fate.
At a time of record displacement and severe pressure on humanitarian resources, delivering on UNHCR’s mandate requires a renewed focus on impact, accountability, and efficiency. This is a shared responsibility. UNHCR will build on the important reforms undertaken in recent years to strengthen operational effectiveness and value for money. I will work with Member States and partners across the public, private, and philanthropic sectors to mobilize the capacity, resources, and collective will needed to reach those most in need.
I am grateful to the Secretary-General, António Guterres, and to the General Assembly for their confidence, and to High Commissioner Filippo Grandi for his principled and tireless leadership during a period of extraordinary global challenge.
I look forward to working closely with UNHCR’s dedicated staff, states, partners, host communities, and, most importantly, refugees themselves to advance protection and durable solutions fit for both the promise and the perils of the 21st century.
Big news: @barhamsalih will be the next UN High Commissioner for Refugees.
He knows displacement first-hand and brings the perspective of a former President of Iraq, an exceptional combination for the challenges ahead.
At the #RefugeeForum, the EU was represented by a strong 🇪🇺 Delegation, led by Commissioner @magnusbrunner. We reaffirmed our support for the multilateral system of international protection and engaged in discussions on asylum systems & major displacement crises.
We welcome the pledge made today by the Syrian Government at the Global Refugee Forum Progress Review, to find sustainable solutions for Syrian refugees and integrate them into national policies and plans.
Key commitments include:
✅ Ensuring voluntary, safe, and dignified return through accurate information to allow refugees to take informed decisions.
✅ Strengthening cooperation with UNHCR via joint programs for refugees and IDPs.
✅ Working with international partners to rehabilitate infrastructure and essential services.
✅ Supporting early recovery through development projects, job creation, and local investment.
✅ Prioritizing vulnerable groups—women, children, the elderly, and persons with disabilities.
✅ Leveraging the expertise of Syrian refugees abroad for national recovery.
✅ Promoting good-faith efforts in international forums to address root causes of displacement.
@UNHCRinSYRIA will continue to support these commendable efforts for Syrian refugees and returnees.
We will continue aligning our political, operational and financial tools to strengthen protection, foster self-reliance of host countries and contribute to durable, future-oriented solutions. We are committed to a Whole-of-Route and Comprehensive Approach to migration.
Great to meet you again, this time in Geneva @IOMchief!
We will continue to pursue a whole-of-route approach when it comes to migration management, and work closely with the IOM.
Thank you, High Commissioner, for your dedication and tireless service to improving conditions for the most vulnerable. In what has been your last year and my first, you were are trusted counterpart.

On my way to Barcelona 🇪🇸 for a truly historic moment!
When I was Mayor of Dubrovnik, I had the privilege to take part in the 10th anniversary of the Barcelona Process. Now, 20 years later, I’m proud to launch the Pact for the Mediterranean with our partners.
Highlights of my trip include:
📌 Launch of the Pact for the Mediterranean at Ministerial level
📌 Regional Forum of the Union for the Mediterranean Ministerial Meeting
📌 “Barcelona +30: Empowering Local Action for Regional Transformation” conference by MedCities
Another major step toward a more stable, secure and prosperous Common Mediterranean Space.

Grateful to @EUAsylumAgency and panelists for today's engaging #StateOfAsylum discussion where I highlighted how a routes-based approach aligns stakeholder efforts across migration routes, linking return & reintegration, protection and legal pathways through stronger partnerships
