Amidst a packed week, I'm glad to catch up again with H.E. Jacques Werner, Netherlands Ambassador to Malaysia, over lunch this afternoon.

This meeting came hot on the heels of my recent visit leading a state delegation to Eindhoven as part of two major efforts; to increase Selangor's resiliency to floods, and developing a workable circular economy.

We exchanged views on the progress the Netherlands' Delta Programme has made in increasing their resiliency to floods and how Selangor can work together to ring-fence Federal, State, and Local Government financing to implement nature-based solutions instead of piecemeal approaches.

H.E. Jacques also shared the Netherlands plan on organise a dialogue with ASEAN countries in Putrajaya which will be held soon, and invited Selangor to actively participate. I affirmed our participation, and added that this conversation will find use dive deeper into a sustainable model for the circular economy.

Selangor has made progress on taking out the use of plastic bags from the daily lives of people, and will move towards eliminating it permanently soon.

However, we have to make progress on reducing e-waste and begin devising plans on dealing with used batteries from electric vehicles to avoid being a dumping ground for EVs.

I look forward to Selangor agencies formalising a working agreement with the Dutch public and private sector soon to bolster the overarching goal of Selangor adapting to climate change sustainably. We must take this threat seriously and waste no time.
