Here's what's happening, as far as I can tell.

-The US agreed with Hamas to release Edan Alexander in exchange for lifting the siege on Gaza.

-Edan was released, but Trump betrayed his promise. Israel continues to starve Gazans.

-It seems the US objective was to clear out this one US-Israeli citizen prior to letting Israel impose its violent endgame on Gaza.

-Meanwhile, the US has been pressing Libya to take 1 million Palestinians, who will be ethnically cleansed by Israel.

-Libya... the US is using the country they destroyed in 2011, and which remains extremely weak and vulnerable to imperial pressure.

Evil doesn't even begin to describe what we are witnessing. All with the complicity of Western leaders and the cowardly silence of the Western press.

Australia and the world was directly called to act last year to prevent genocide.

It was not an opinion, but a legal ruling that firmly binds every State party to the rules agreed and commitments made.

Despite countless official statements of concern, however, no action was taken.

Now millions, mostly children, face famine.

Despite the importance of international law to Australia, as seen in the very welcome ruling on MH17, which may finally deliver some measure of closure and justice to many Australian families, we have not found the will to extend this law to others.

To our lasting shame.

Australia has spent far more time policing words and phrases and impugning anyone who expresses opposition to genocide, including an Indigenous AFL footballer just last week, than undertaking our legal duty.

Athletes and their governing bodies, as bound by the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGP’s) have a duty to uphold basic human rights. The AFL should have made clear that every player is entitled to stand against genocide, wherever and whenever it has been found to be occurring, or at risk of occurring.

Further, hundreds of athletes and their families have been killed and every athlete should stand in solidarity with their brothers and sisters around the world, wherever their rights are violated.

The additional matter of an Indigenous sport leader being lectured and policed on genocide, is another thing entirely.

The world needs to act in every way possible to end the violence, forced starvation and ethnic cleansing, free all hostages and political prisoners, impose UN resolutions, hold all parties accountable and chart a path to peace through international law and justice for all.

The only appropriate way to respect and protect all Australian communities equally, is to apply ourselves consistently as a member of the international community.

And Australia should always, proudly, hold firm to the commitments we have made.

Just as we rely on those commitments from others.
