In March, James Dinneen accompanied Emil Ruff, a microbial ecologist, and his team on an expedition down a mine, to one of the deepest places that humans have ever visited—looking for what they called dark oxygen. Scientists used to think that life-sustaining oxygen could be found only near Earth’s surface, but in the past few years small quantities of free oxygen have been detected deep underground. Ruff’s team hoped to collect new samples of ancient water in the mine, suspecting that oxygen was playing an unrecognized role in powering underground life. If dark oxygen keeps turning up in unlikely places, that “probably means that the deep biosphere is more extensive than we thought previously, and has even more cells than we thought,” Devan Nisson, a NASA geobiologist, said.
