Queen Victoria was born #onthisday in 1819. She succeeded her uncle, William IV, at the age of just nineteen and was crowned in the Abbey in 1838. Her reign lasted for more than 63 years, making her the second-longest reigning monarch in British history, after Queen Elizabeth II.
The 7th Duke of Newcastle was an intensely religious diminutive cripple. (As a bub he'd been hard-dropped by a nurse.) He befriended Oscar Wilde: at Oxford his circle was of similar stripe. He married unhappily, and like a teensy weensy wobbly gypsy took refuge in caravanning!
