Your brain doesn’t know what time it is. Every time you replay that conversation from last year, that mistake from last month, that moment you wish you could take back from yesterday, your brain treats it like it’s happening right now. Same stress chemicals. Same alarm bells. You’re not remembering it. You’re reliving it, on a loop you built yourself.

That's because of two things: your brain doesn't know the difference between what's really happening and what you're just imagining, and neuroplasticity means that your brain automates things that you think about and turns them into programs that it runs without you having to think about them next time.

So, the more you rehearse something from the past or something you're just imagining, the more your brain builds out a reality as if that thing is still here right now.

The ninth Commandment of self brain surgery is, "I must believe that what I'm doing I'm getting better at." That means if you're doing things with your mind that are making your brain better at living in the past or worrying about imaginary outcomes, you're getting better at feeling worse. So knock it off.

Here’s the shift: you can’t edit the past, but you can stop rehearsing it. Every replay is a rehearsal, and your brain gets better at whatever you rehearse. Let's make neuroplasticity work for us and not against us.

We call that self-brain surgery. It's not easy at first, it's hard and holy work. But remember, you get better at whatever you repeatedly do

Philippians 3:13 says it like this: forget what lies behind and strain towards what lies ahead. Not denying it happened, but refusing to keep performing it. There's better stuff in the future, but not if you keep building a brain that lives in the past.

Don't upgrade to the $100 Claude plan if you keep hitting token limits. Instead, use these 21 hacks to make the $20/month subscription enough:

Hack 1. Do not upload PDFs in Claude. It costs a huge amount of tokens. Paste the text into a Google Doc & download it as .md. it is not the same.

Hack 2. Figure out the solution in Chat on Fable 5 High & then move to Opus 5 on High effort to execute the task.

Hack 3. Start any new Claude chat with this prompt: “I need [task] for [goal]. I will know it worked when [target]. Ask me questions first, using the AskUserQuestion tool.”

Hack 4. When one specific thing is wrong, fix that section, not the entire thing. Prompt: "Only redo section 3. Keep everything else. Just the output."

Hack 5. Give the entire task at one go, not one problem after another in different prompts. Like: "Summarize this, list the points, suggest a headline"

Hack 6. Stop sending follow-up prompts like "no, I meant...". Click 'Edit' on your original message to fix a specific problem.

Hack 7. Turn your repeated prompts into Claude Skills. It saves you time & tokens.

Hack 8. Use Sonnet only for grammar checks. I'd use ChatGPT, not even Sonnet. Use Fable for complex tasks. Use Opus to execute the tasks.

Hack 9. Do not create .md files as a part of workflow. It's too much work for less outcome. Instead turn them into Claude Skills.

Hack 10. When Claude starts to hallucinate, click "edit" on an earlier message.

Hack 11. Once you send 15-20 prompts in a chat. Do not continue with that chat; instead, ask for a summary. Copy the brief. Open a fresh chat.

Hack 12. Put files in a Project. Now every chat inside that project has the same context overall.

Hack 13. Upload only the files a single task needs. Do not unnecessarily give context; it makes it less creative.

Hack 14. One chat for one problem. It doesn't need more explanation.

Hack 15. Turn off search & connectors. Switch them on if you need them for a task.

Hack 16. Use Claude Schedule for mundane tasks over weeks. Type /schedule: "Every Monday at 7 am, create my weekly briefing."

Hack 17. This is for people who use Claude Code. Point Claude Code at the file, not the whole repo. "Build a bar chart from this CSV. Save as chart.png."

Hack 18. Go to Claude settings > Personal Preferences. Set your tone.

Hack 19. "Make it better" doesn't mean anything in Claude's language. Give more context. I speak my prompts with wispr .ai to give the full context at one go.

Hack 20. Claude uses a rolling 5-hour window. So I usually send something right when I arrive at the office and then early + late afternoon. So about 3 sessions.

Hack 21. Claude is not an all-rounder model. It can't generate good images. Use ChatGPT for image generation.

I have been using these hacks, not only to save tokens but also to get more creativity out of Claude.

Elon Musk didn't have a background in mechanical engineering or rocket science when he founded Tesla and SpaceX.

He didn't.

He was once asked how he packed so much knowledge into his brain so quickly.

His answer: "It is important to view knowledge as sort of a semantic tree — make sure you understand the fundamental principles, i.e. the trunk and big branches, before you get into the leaves/details or there is nothing for them to hang on to."

Most of us do it backwards.

We go straight for the leaves - the tactics, the hacks, the step-by-step methods - before we've built any trunk to hang them on.

The information doesn't stick.

-We read a book, forget it within a week.
-We take a course, can't apply it a month later.
-We collect knowledge without ever building understanding.

Musk builds the trunk first.

The science backs this up.

Neuroplasticity is the brain's ability to rewire itself and works like a tree.

Learning something new is a series of attempts, failures, and adjustments.

Neural connections that result in success grow stronger.

Unproductive connections eventually break off like dead branches.

This is why understanding fundamentals isn't just academically satisfying, it's mechanically how the brain learns best.

When you have a solid trunk, new information has somewhere to attach.

Without it, everything slides off.

Here's what that looks like in practice:

Instead of learning how to build a rocket engine, Musk learned why rockets work the way they do - the physics, the materials science, the thermodynamics.

Once those principles were in place, the specific engineering decisions became far easier to evaluate, question, and improve upon.

Instead of memorizing investing methods, Charlie Munger built what he calls a "latticework of theory" from psychology, history, mathematics, physics, philosophy, and biology and then used that latticework to make better decisions across all of them.

This is the difference between linear and residual knowledge.

A method works once, for one problem.

A principle works hundreds of times, across dozens of contexts you haven't even encountered yet.

Harrington Emerson, the American efficiency engineer, put it plainly: "As to methods, there may be a million and then some, but principles are few. The man who grasps principles can successfully select his own methods. The man who tries methods, ignoring principles, is sure to have trouble."

So the next time you sit down to learn something, whether it's a new skill, a new industry, or a new discipline, resist the pull of the tactics.

Ask instead:

-What are the trunk and big branches here?
-What are the first principles that, once understood, make everything else easier to figure out?

That's how residual knowledge works.

I agree.

The trust Multichoice placed in Paga when we were quite early in our journey was our unlocking partnership.

The first integration to paying your DStv on Paga was actually an email we sent to an address monitored by two Multichoice staff. Upon recieving the email they gave credit to the account. We did this for 6 months before Multichoice agreed for Paga to integrate directly into its system in South Africa. We were the first company to do so.

What was also being tested in that 6 months was my unequivocal promise that we will always settle Multichoice for every payment the next morning without failure. I argued we would not put down any deposits but that should we miss a single day, our business ends. It's been about 16 years and we've never failed on that promise.

At some point Multichoice used Paga for payment collection in its own stores while they upgraded their systems.

In the early days I would be at Multichoice offices at least once a week and many times unannounced. Everyone knew me. Those appearances also led to other opportunities with them and deepened our mutual trust.
