On this day June 9th in the year 1963,Fannie Lou Hamer and eight other black female civil rights activists were stopped and arrested in Winona Mississippi.Hamer was beaten by a black deputy sheriff who was ordered to do so by a white sheriff,she never recovered from her injuries.
