@StuartBudd1@duncan_morrow@pmdfoster I think the U.K. commitment to European Defence is exercised through NATO. But I didn’t mention the UK, you did. Ireland’s defence spending is shamed by every European country.
And then, not long from now, the people making noise about this will ask: Why do we have such poor politicians? Why is it only weirdos want to go into it nowadays? And part of the answer is because you make it impossible for any normal person to do so.

@ByronYork ‘Was’ here could be being used as a subjunctive rather than a past tense. Technically ‘were’ would have been correct, but ‘was’ here has become fairly common usage.

@NickCohen4 There’s a second side to this: the interpretation (in papers as well) of any non-committal answer as “Minister refuses to rule out tax rises”. Just as damaging, I would argue.
