When you’re a first-time user who’s just set up an online account, @Walmart apparently likes to cancel every single order you make while providing you absolutely no explanation or instructions for how to fix things.
@abw317 Nihil dixit.
“Scripserim”, “lēgerim”, “vēnerim”—cujus temporis verba [sunt], praeteritī an futūrī an utrīusque?
@AlpacaAurelius PBS or SciShow made a video about this not too far back. Researchers found that extreme weather events (hurricanes, tornadoes, floods) have a long-lasting effect on mortality because of how they disrupt community life and people’s relationships with health care professionals.
Since it is so common for dictionaries and textbooks to gloss the phrase “floccī faciō” with the archaic idiom “it’s not worth a straw to me”, I’ve spent the past 10 years thinking that floccus meant “straw”. Very happy to be cured of my ignorance.
In suburban Texas during an ice storm, it’s best not to leave the house for a few days. I pulled out a can of mackerel from the back of my pantry, and the “best before” date was in 2022. When I saw that, I thought of @scottlincicome and ate it. I hope I’m OK tomorrow.
I just spent the past 30 minutes interacting with useless @AmazonHelp chatbots trying to complain about how the latest Kindle update broke the dictionary interface. I asked for an email address to send a written complaint, but they refused, so I canceled my Prime membership.
@AmazonHelp That’s not the feature I’m referring to. If I wasn’t satisfied with the definition I saw in tap-and-hold, I used to be able to open the full dictionary and browse to find what I want. That feature appears to be gone.
@amazon On my Kindle, not only could I get a word’s definition by clicking on it, but I could also open the dictionary. I used that second option every day. You recently removed that feature. That’s enough for me to buy a new device and go elsewhere for e-books. Fix it fast!
In my ebook of Quintilian’s Institūtiō Ōrātōria, there was a section in Book VI with a major scanning error where “in” was consistently misspelled as “īra”. It was very confusing. Now in Book VIII, there’s a passage where “id” is being used frequently in confusing ways. 🤷♂️
