Critical Thinking/Communication = TOP 2 SKILLS Managers look for, but 45-75% rate recent grads poorly. Now colleges are using GET YOUR DUCKS IN A ROWE to fix it
Check out a short segment https://t.co/MbBmDJUEzS on Dr. Warren Simpson and Dr. Veronica Snow's (Angelo State U. TX) POV on the value of the GET YOUR DUCKS IN A ROWE series, projects, and student presentations.
Many thanks to both of them for not only encouraging me to apply to the Lilly Conference - Evidenced Based Teaching & Learning, but in joining me for a 40 minute session last week in Austin.
Excited to be selected along with Dr. Warren Simpson and Dr. Veronica Snow to present at the LILLY CONFERENCE - 'EVIDENCE BASED TEACHING & LEARNING' (Austin) - on how the framework I created for addessing poor critical thinking and communication skills via my books, projects and student presentations, has proven to be extremely successful at improving student competence in these 2 important workforce skills. #criticalthinking #strategicwriting #writingskills #communicationskills #workforceskills #GetYourDucksInARowe
My dear friend Beth Gelles just came out with an incredible book called CRAZY FOR COLLEGE. For anyone who has early high school children or grandchildren - you / their parents need to buy this book.
Besides being brilliant (Harvard/Kellogg School Of Management) and talented, she is the cofounder of "Acceptance Ahead" - a college admissions/consulting agency for parents and students.
She has visited 160 college campuses around the US in her 12 years in business meeting with admissions staff to understand their college's requirements.
I'm letting you know for her, but most importantly, I'm letting you know because after reading it, it is the smartest advice I've ever heard about the application and admission process. It's also a fun / easy read with engaging stories in every chapter to provide context to her perspective.
It's much more competitive and structured vs when we went through it - even with our kids.
So, if you have somebody in high school soon to enter the college process, give it a look. The earlier in HS the better.

STRATEGIC WRITING STRUCTURES THINKING!
Most students learn Persuasive Writing. And that matters.
Persuasive writing introduces argument, structure, evidence, and critical thinking. It teaches students to take a position and defend it — skills essential in law, journalism, public policy, and many academic disciplines.
But in the workplace, writing serves a slightly different purpose. Executives don’t want 3 pages to cover all details then get to the point. They want Clear. Concise. Compelling. Ideally, on one page. They want writing that:
- Identifies the core target
- Summarizes a situation
- Clarifies the objective
- Evaluates options
- Recommends action
- Moves work forward
And they want it organized in a way that’s predictable and easy to follow — regardless of who wrote it.
That’s where Strategic Writing comes in.
It doesn’t replace persuasive writing. It builds on it.
Strategic Writing is a simple 10-step structure that helps students:
• Think logically
• Organize consistently
• Focus on outcomes
• Write for decision-makers
• Develop real workforce communication skills
Professors consistently tell me the step-by-step structure has been the key to getting students to both understand the approach and easily adopt it.
It’s a proven process widely used in the workforce to streamline communication to improve both efficiency and productivity.
Strategic Writing doesn’t make writing rigid. It makes thinking visible.
And that’s a foundation students need — from freshman year forward.
“Students lack the skills to be able to think critically. I like your books. They get right to what students need to improve. You explain it in a way that is easy for all
different levels to get. Your books would be perfect for a freshman seminar class! The way that your books explain it is you take them step-by-step and it’s absolute genius.
I felt like before they heard you and after they heard you (presenting to the class) was a total difference in their writing on the sponsorship letter which came after the fact. You have lots of golden nuggets in each chapter. They can read them quickly, they gain something from it, …and this is very practical. I felt like the books were a tremendous help and they did a really good job getting to the heart of the issue of what students need.” Dr. Scott Bradshaw.

“The results for the first pass were very positive. (After reading the books), we had both the freshman class and the senior class use a different project assignment with the ‘tool’ (The A-D-A-PT-E-R Method). Both classes had selfadmitted improvement. The products were so much better than they had been
during the past five years. All of us were excited to see that this product, utilized in the way it was, created such a positive outcome. Because the students saw it!
You did it, Jim. We just need to take our expertise and apply it and create the right assignment that makes more of an experiential process out of it. Just the
extent to which you’ll go to help reach these kids. It’s just phenomenal! So, thank you.” Dr. Duane Crider
