@BBCNews Canada is a failed state and a complete joke that has been ripping off the USA for decades. Their economy is minuscule and we don’t need them. Fuck them.

Oslo was once ordered to move.
In 1624, a fire burned through the old city for three days. King Christian IV decided not to rebuild it in the same place. Instead, he ordered a new city built closer to Akershus Fortress, across Bjørvika. The streets were laid out in a grid, residents moved their businesses there, and the rebuilt city was renamed Christiania.
That decision still shapes central Oslo.
The medieval city had stood farther east, around what is now Gamlebyen. After the fire, the new Christiania was built beneath Akershus Fortress with a much more orderly street plan and stricter building rules.
Walk through Kvadraturen today and you’re still walking through that 17th-century layout. The rectangular blocks, straight streets and proximity to Akershus all come from Christian IV’s decision after the fire.
Akershus had already been standing for centuries by then. Construction began around the end of the 13th century, and its position above the harbor made it one of Norway’s most important defensive sites. Moving the city closer to it gave Christiania better protection.
The city kept Christian IV’s name for roughly 300 years. Christiania later became Kristiania, and in 1924 Norway’s parliament voted to restore the old name.
On January 1, 1925, Kristiania became Oslo again.
That’s what makes central Oslo so interesting to walk.
You can start around the remains of medieval Oslo in Gamlebyen, move toward Bjørvika, then continue into the streets laid out after the 1624 fire. In a relatively short walk, you can see the city before Christiania, the city built after the fire and the modern waterfront that came much later.
Oslo can feel very new around the Opera House, MUNCH and the towers of Bjørvika. But a few streets away, the layout still reflects a decision made more than 400 years ago.
If I were visiting, I’d spend time at Akershus Fortress, walk through Kvadraturen, then head east toward Gamlebyen.
It’s a much better way to understand how Oslo became the city it is now.
