🧵 THREAD: United States helped engineer a coup against Pakistan's PM Imran Khan because of his neutral stance on Ukraine.
I've covered this story for over a year and everything Khan claimed has been confirmed yet again. I've said on numerous occasions that what really angered the Americans was Khan's visit to Moscow on the day the war started. The timing was clearly coincidence (diplomatic protocol is to usually schedule state visits well in advance, you don't just randomly show up), but the US took offense at this and Pakistan's refusal to blindly follow the West in condemning and sanctioning Russia.
In reality, @ImranKhanPTI was simply tending to his country's needs: concluding a purchase of 2 million tons of wheat, and a gas deal with Russia.
Even before the war, he made clear that Pakistan would pursue a non-aligned foreign policy, equally taking up a neutral position on the Ukraine war.
Imran Khan is by far Pakistan's most popular politician and was ousted by a miniscule margin during a vote of no confidence. He would very likely win the upcoming elections, and so even after his removal, his opponents have relentlessly attacked him, attempting to bar him from running for office by throwing a million cases at him, including bogus charges such as terrorism and corruption.
Khan was also accused of supposedly violating the Official Secrets Act, after announcing that he had in his possession proof of US involvement in his removal from office. He was then blocked from publishing the document by the High Court in Islamabad.
Now the meeting minutes were leaked to The Intercept, confirming that his ouster was indeed lobbied for by US diplomats, and directly linked to Pakistan's neutral stance on Ukraine.
The US not only conveyed its wishes to see Khan's removal in the upcoming vote, but issued veiled threats of international isolation were he to remain.
This meeting between Asad Majeed Khan (Pakistan's Ambassador to the United States) and Donald Lu (Assistant Secretary of State for the Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs) took place shortly before the vote of no confidence, which ultimately succeeded in removing Imran Khan, the most popular politician in the country, against the wishes of the people. This culminated in massive rallies and demonstrations across Pakistan in support of him.
So blunt was the United States' approach and interference in Pakistan's internal affairs, that Pakistan's Foreign Ministry issued a démarche (a formal protest) to the American embassy after the aforementioned discussion.
And every word Khan said about American involvement in his ouster was true.
Since the coup, Khan has been arrested multiple times and even survived an assassination attempt. Thousands of his supporters have been imprisoned and the country hasn't known peace since.
I lived in Pakistan for a few years when I was a boy and remain very fond of it. Sad to see the country sabotaged like this.

A document proves the US State Department pressured Pakistan's government in March 2022 to overthrow PM Imran Khan, due to his neutrality over the proxy war in Ukraine
This is exactly what I reported a year ago, but it was smeared as a "conspiracy theory"
