A mass funeral has been held in Gaza City after at least 100 bodies were recovered from the rubble of a residential building targeted by an Israeli airstrike in 2023.

A distinguished public servant, diplomat and economic development leader, Amb. Hassan’s participation brings an important government and policy perspective to a Forum focused on strengthening entrepreneurship, investment, private-sector growth and regional economic integration.
Amb. Gamal Hassan is the Minister of Commerce and Industry of the Federal Government of Somalia, having assumed office in December 2025. Prior to his current appointment, he served as Director of the IGAD Centre of Excellence for Climate Adaptation and Environmental Protection.
He previously served as Minister of Planning, Investment and Economic Development of Somalia, where he led the formulation of the National Development Plan (NDP-9), strengthened economic governance and advanced major resilience and aid-coordination reforms. Amb. Hassan also played a central coordination and strategic planning role in Somalia’s national debt relief process, working closely with the Ministry of Finance, the Office of the Prime Minister and international partners, including the World Bank and International Monetary Fund.
During his tenure, he established several key national institutions and mechanisms, including the Resilience Secretariat; National Recovery and Resilience Facility; National Economic Council (NEC); SOMINVEST Office; Somali National Bureau of Statistics (SNBS); Aid Information Management System (AIMS); Donor Engagement Office; and National Durable Solutions Unit (DSU).
Amb. Hassan previously served as Somalia’s Ambassador to the Republic of Kenya, where he strengthened bilateral relations, supported the resumption of direct flights between the two countries and oversaw the return of Somali refugees under the Tripartite Agreement.
Amb. Hassan has represented Somalia in numerous high-level international forums, including as Permanent Representative to UNEP and UN-Habitat, and as Focal Point to both IGAD and ICAO. In these capacities, he led Somalia’s preparations for regional summits and guided the initial successful relocation of national airspace management operations to Mogadishu.
