Reading remains one of the most powerful tools for rebuilding. It strengthens minds, restores hope, and helps us reimagine possibilities while creating new opportunities.
The 2026 National Reading Competition journey has begun under the theme “Together We Read, Together We Rise.”
It was an absolute delight to be invited to deliver the main address at the 2026 media launch of National Reading Competition held on Tuesday night. As a Ministry, we remain resolute that literacy is the foundation of national progress. Since its establishment in 1988, the National Reading Competition has stood as the flagship outreach programme of the Jamaica Library Service, an agency of the Ministry of Education,Skills,Youth and Information. This initiative reflects our firm belief that reading is central to national inspiration and essential to Jamaica’s continued development. The growth of this programme is both encouraging and instructive. In 2024,participation stood at 3,133 readers. In 2025, that number increased significantly to 5,623 readers (a 78% increase). For 2026,we are setting our sights even higher, with a target of over 6,000 participants.Over its lifetime, the competition has impacted more than 100,000 Jamaicans. This momentum reflects a renewed national enthusiasm for reading, strengthened by meaningful collaboration among schools, libraries, families, and communities. Special thanks to the many sponsors of this year’s competition.
“Reading helps us restore what no storm can wash away—hope, resilience, and vision.” 🇯🇲📚

The launch marks an important step toward improving the quality, sustainability and impact of school libraries in supporting teaching and learning across the education system.
The JLS School Library Standards were officially launched today at the Kingston and St. Andrew Parish Library, by Dr. Kasan Troupe, Permanent Secretary in @MOEYJamaica.
Developed by the Jamaica Library Service and adopted by the Ministry in April 2025, the standards also promote greater equity in library services, ensuring that schools can progressively build and improve their libraries through clearly defined levels of development.
