@Guernicacist He wanted to stand in a MP by-election earlier in the year and Starmer refused it. which cause a huge backlash from a lot of Labour MP's / members and a lot of general public in that part of the world. once a 2nd seat came up and he won was literally the KO punch to Starmer.
@Guernicacist From what I know Burnham was massively popular as a Mayor and people have wanted him back as an MP before. But Burnham wasn't really interested. something obviously changed and a sitting MP basically resigned his seat to allow Burnham to stand.
@policylaila No chance, would be political suicide in his own party already. the party has the mandate to govern. rightly or wrongly all he needs to do is become PM and crack on.. In this instance there probably should be a GE though. no one really knows where he stands on anything.
@nightrider20244 Despite what people say and how our politics work in theory. people vote for who they see at the top and a party they align with. whether it's right or wrong. it's becoming more Americanised / popularity contest and left vs right battle.
@nightrider20244 I think the whole law around it needs changing. lower the fixed term before a GE to 3 or 4 years and if the standing PM goes before that time it should trigger a GE. will probably never happen.
@Ewan__Ferguson@Guernicacist Which was the whole issues around getting Burnham a seat ASAP cause the MP's wanted him. earlier in the year Kier blocked him standing didn't he. but probably had so much pressure on him he couldn't stop Burnham a 2nd time..
@ToonDazza@AndyBurnhamGM Having said that Burnham as been an MP for a matter of days / hours. In this instance maybe there should be a GE as we don't really know what this guy and therefore party really stands for..
@ToonDazza@AndyBurnhamGM We never ever in the recent history of UK politics have ever voted directly for a PM. we vote for a local candidate to act on our behalf at Westminster. The party chooses a leader then has the mandate if biggest party. I have never ever voted for a PM..
@BenGrahamUK Please can people realise we never vote for a PM!! Having said that Burnham as been an MP for a matter of days / hours. In this instance maybe there should be a GE as we don't really know what this guy and therefore party really stands for..
@Guernicacist Burnham will become the next PM unopposed I suspect. no challenge from any other Labour MP. Burnham has been an MP since Thursday.. Previously an MP in different seat from 2001 - 2017. then mayor of Manchester.
@Guernicacist No worries. I ran out of characters in my message. It does go deeper than that, but depends on which side of the fence you sit right / left. I tried summarizing it. Ultimately he / it became untenable in his own party and Burnham a more popular choice with Labour MP's.
@MartinSLewis Please can people realise we never vote for a PM!! Having said that Burnham as been an MP for a matter of days / hours. In this instance maybe there should be a GE as we don't really know what this guy and therefore party really stands for..
