Religion is declining across much of the West. Christianity has lost millions of adherents, churches are emptying, and the religiously unaffiliated are growing rapidly.

But there is bad news for atheists: demography tells a very different global story. Religious populations are often younger and growing faster.

Sex with children and animals. Ruhollah Khomeini devoted parts of his Tahrir al-Wasilah to disturbing sexual jurisprudence involving children and the legal consequences of bestiality, alongside rules on anal sex and menstruation.

Perhaps the founder of the Islamic Republic should have spent less time on medieval sexual jurisprudence—and more time learning how to run a modern economy.

Karl Marx actually wrote this. He also used vicious racist language about Black people in private correspondence, while Friedrich Engels made appalling remarks about Czechs, Croats and other Slavs.

Russia’s war has developed its own vocabulary of brutality.

New recruits can become “meat”—soldiers thrown into assaults where the loss of the entire group may be considered acceptable. Before deployment, commanders allegedly force some soldiers to hand over their bank cards and PIN codes. Researchers say commanders can then take part of the salaries and injury compensation deposited into their accounts.

Want to stay somewhere safer? That can cost money. Refuse to pay, and you may be sent to the most dangerous positions—or face “zeroing,” a term used for violent death at the hands of commanders or fellow soldiers.

According to researchers Alexandra Archipova and Yuri Lapshin, these are not merely isolated abuses but practices that serve a purpose within the system.

A horrifying picture of an army in which human beings can become expendable resources—and even their survival can have a price.

I would be part of a very small minority that deeply disagrees. If people voted for unknown parties without connections to the super-rich, mainstream media, or lobbyists—parties that actively seek to reduce clientelism, corruption, and shady politics—change could happen. But you would have to change the people who vote.

As a psychotic patient myself, I know how difficult it can be to experience hallucinations and delusions. We rightly recognize them as departures from reality. Yet when similar claims involve religion—hearing supernatural beings, receiving messages from God or believing in supernatural intervention—society can suddenly treat them with profound seriousness simply because they are culturally accepted.
