Laura Kuenssberg asks if it bothers Labour's Bridget Phillipson that people who create jobs and pay a lot of tax, citing, Jim Ratcliffe, move abroad - except, that's not the full story.

My View: Did you know companies owned by Jim Ratcliffe have received public support worth around £630 million, based on reported UK and European measures?

That includes up to £70m in UK state aid, a £150m Grangemouth support package, €300m of French support for the Lavéra site, and a reported €178m in German tax support. Not all of this is a direct cash grant - but it is still substantial public backing.

Yet Ratcliffe criticises welfare spending while many working people need support because low pay does not cover the cost of living.

And despite building his fortune through a British-founded business, he moved his tax residence to Monaco - a move reported at the time to be capable of avoiding £4 billion in UK tax.

He has also criticised immigration in the UK, where around 19% of people were born abroad. Yet he has chosen to live in Monaco, where around 76% of residents are non-Monégasque, making it one of the most immigrant-heavy countries in the world.

That is the contradiction: public support for a billionaire’s companies is treated as investment; support for working people is treated as dependency. He benefits from the state when it protects his interests, but attacks those who need the state to protect theirs.

I’d rather celebrate entrepreneurs who build successful businesses while recognising a responsibility to the country and communities that helped make that success possible.

He is a billionaire who owns the Daily mail. He lives and works in Britain, but opts out of paying tax in Britain.

John Worboys was found guilty of drugging and raping 12 women, he was later found guilty of raping 4 more women, the police think that he had raped over 100 women, he was given an "indeterminate sentence with a minimum term of 8 years".
8 YEARS?
Then the Parole Board wanted to let him out of prison because Worboys had convinced them that he had "Found God".
Two of his victims had to take the parole board to court to stop Worboys being freed.

He has since been convicted of raping another 3 women and ADMITTED RAPING 90 VICTIMS but his second request for parole was rejected this year.
But never forget that his original minimum sentence was just 8 YEARS FOR RAPING 12 WOMEN, does that sound like a justice system that is designed to really protect women and girls?

In 1988 Dolly Parton pulled every 7th and 8th grader in Sevier County into a room and told them to pick a buddy.

She made them sign a contract.. if BOTH graduate, she hands you both $500. One fails, nobody gets paid.

The county dropout rate went from 35% to 6%.

She handed out the checks herself.

In 1989 she offered $500 to every kid in the county who wanted to go to the local college.

When Gatlinburg burned in 2016, she sent 900 families $1,000 a month for six months.

You've probably heard that part.

Here's the part you haven't:

The fund raised more than expected, so she showed up in May and handed every one of those families another $5,000 on top.

Then she quietly put $3 million into the recovery group that handles the years after the news trucks leave.

She built her county an entire hospital.

She played a benefit concert in 2007, Dollywood and the Stampede matched it, and LeConte Medical Center opened in 2010 with a birthing unit and a women's center in it.

In 2022 she started covering 100% of tuition, books, and fees for Dollywood employees.

Full-time, part-time, AND seasonal.

In 1991 she paid for a bald eagle sanctuary because the birds couldn't be released back into the wild, no press release.

And when Hurricane Helene came through here in Western North Carolina, she wrote a personal check for $1 million and her companies matched it.

She didn't owe North Carolina anything, but she helped us anyway.

She started the Imagination Library because her daddy couldn't read or write. Before he passed, he told her it was the most important thing she ever did.
