GROK’S VIDEO-ANALYSIS ACCESS APPEARS TO HAVE CHANGED — FULL DOCUMENTED ACCOUNT

I am publishing this because I have now documented the issue through Grok, Gemini and ChatGPT, and because the explanation I initially received no longer accounts for what is happening.

This is the first time I have publicly raised an issue like this. I am not attacking Grok, blaming the model, or claiming that I know the cause. I am documenting a sudden and testable discrepancy between Grok’s stated video capabilities, what repeatedly worked for me before, and what the system is delivering now.

WHAT GROK WAS SUPPOSED TO DO

xAI’s current documentation also says that:

• Grok can analyze videos found in X posts through X Search when video understanding is enabled.
• Users can upload MP4 and MOV files directly.
• Grok can transcribe and interpret uploaded audio/video.

Based on my own repeated firsthand use, Grok previously performed real video analysis. I could ask about spoken content, visual details, clothing, objects and events at different points in a video. This was not merely Grok summarizing a webpage title or describing a thumbnail.

WHAT HAPPENED ON 18 AUGUST 2026

During a live working session, I supplied Grok with several external video sources, including VRT news streams, a YouTube video and a third-party media page.

Instead of receiving and analyzing the underlying video and audio, Grok reported that it had access only to:

• Page-level text and metadata
• Preview images or thumbnails
• No usable sequence of video frames
• No audio track or transcript derived from the video itself

Grok therefore could not reliably tell me what someone was wearing, what was being said, or what occurred throughout the timeline.

Importantly, Grok did not pretend that it had watched the videos. It clearly distinguished between the actual media it received and the limited metadata or thumbnails available to it. That operational honesty is part of the documented record.

THE FIRST EXPLANATION
I took Grok’s report to Gemini for a second review.
Gemini initially explained the discrepancy as a difference between native and external media:
• A directly uploaded video or X-hosted video would supposedly enter Grok’s multimodal video pipeline.
• An external YouTube, VRT or third-party link might be processed only as a webpage, leaving Grok with metadata and thumbnails.

Gemini then went further and suggested that anti-bot systems, DRM, geo-blocking, copyright enforcement, regional restrictions, the EU Digital Services Act and possible xAI throttling could explain why external-video access appeared to disappear.

At that stage, the distinction sounded technically plausible: perhaps Grok could still analyze native X videos but could no longer retrieve videos from external websites.

THE CONTROL TEST THAT CHANGED THE CONCLUSION

After the PDF conversation was completed, I performed the decisive control test:

I supplied Grok with a video hosted directly on X.

It produced the same practical failure.
Grok again did not receive sufficient video and audio content for genuine analysis. The result resembled what happened with YouTube and other webpages: limited surrounding information rather than functional access to the complete media content.

That means the earlier “native X video versus external website” explanation does not adequately explain the present behavior.

If an X-hosted video also fails, the problem cannot simply be that YouTube, VRT or another external website is preventing Grok from retrieving its video.

THE THREE-SYSTEM EVIDENCE TRAIL

This issue has now passed through three separate systems:

GROK

Grok was the system being tested. It reported what it actually received during the live tests: metadata and limited still images, but not the usable video frames and audio required to perform the requested analysis.

GEMINI

Gemini reviewed Grok’s written report and the broader conversation. It agreed that a real discrepancy existed, but its proposed explanation focused on external-site restrictions and claimed that native uploads and X-hosted videos should still work.

The later X-hosted-video test undermined that explanation.

CHATGPT

I then supplied the complete six-page PDF to ChatGPT for an independent review against current primary sources.

ChatGPT verified that:

• Elon Musk did publish the statement that Grok can analyze any video.
• xAI currently documents video understanding for videos found through X Search.
• xAI currently documents transcription and interpretation of uploaded MP4/MOV files.
• My observed results do not match those documented capabilities.

ChatGPT also found that several causal claims in Gemini’s explanation were not supported by available primary evidence.

There is currently no verified evidence establishing that:

• The DSA caused this failure
• xAI deliberately restricted the capability
• xAI silently throttled its external-video pipeline
• Copyright enforcement caused the change
• The problem is specifically regional
• The change was an intentional policy decision

Those remain possibilities, not established facts.

WHAT IS CONFIRMED AND WHAT IS NOT

Confirmed from the documented tests:

• Grok previously performed functional video analysis in my repeated personal use.
• On 18 August 2026, multiple external video sources produced only metadata or thumbnails instead of usable video/audio.
• An X-hosted video subsequently produced the same practical failure.
• The failure therefore extends beyond the original external-link explanation.
• Grok’s delivered behavior does not currently match xAI’s documented X-video and uploaded-video capabilities in these tests.
Not yet confirmed:
• Whether this is a temporary outage or regression
• Whether it affects every user
• Whether it is account-specific, subscription-specific or regional
• Whether xAI changed the underlying product
• Whether a safety or policy layer is involved
• Whether any law or regulatory action contributed to it
• Whether the change is temporary or permanent
MY CONCLUSION

There is a real, documented capability gap.

Grok is publicly described and officially documented as being able to understand video, including video found on X. In my current testing, it is not receiving the actual visual and audio content necessary to perform that analysis—not only from YouTube and news websites, but also from a video hosted directly on X.

I am personally certain that the practical capability worked for me before this change. The documentary record proves the present failure and the contradiction with the stated capability. It does not yet prove who changed what, why it happened, or whether the cause was deliberate.
That distinction matters.
This is not an accusation and it is not an attempt to manufacture a political explanation. It is a request for technical transparency.
MY QUESTIONS TO xAI
Is there a current outage or regression affecting Grok’s video-understanding pipeline?
Has Grok’s ability to analyze videos hosted directly on X changed?

Are account, subscription, device or regional restrictions involved?

Is video understanding available in the consumer Grok interface in the same way that xAI’s documentation describes it for X Search and uploaded files?

If the capability has been limited or changed, when did that happen and why?

If nothing changed, how does xAI explain the same metadata-only failure across external links and an X-hosted video?

Turning punishment into structured skill-building (plumbing, mechanics, baking, woodwork, basic construction, etc.) is a lot smarter than just locking young people up in already overcrowded jails.
Why it could work well:

They learn a real, usable trade that they can actually make money with when they get out.
It gives them daily structure, discipline, and a sense of purpose instead of sitting in a cell getting angrier.
It’s cheaper for society: they can often go home at night, so no need to feed/house them 24/7.
It reduces the chance of them becoming lifelong criminals. A guy who learns to be a decent plumber or mechanic has a real path out.

The realistic problems:

Not everyone will cooperate. Some will be lazy, disruptive, or refuse to learn.
It needs good supervision and organization (governments are often bad at this).
For the most violent or dangerous repeat offenders, some real jail time is still necessary for public safety.

But for the majority of the young rioters and low-level troublemakers we see in Brussels and other cities, your approach is way better than the current system that mostly just warehouses people and releases them worse than before.

I’ve been working with Grok for months on a long-term creative project.

I use two different Groks in a team setup: one for thinking, research and discussion, and Grok Imagine for creating the visual panels.

I copy text between them to build the project together.
The biggest problem is that Grok has no memory between conversations.

Every time I close the app, the entire context disappears and I have to explain everything again from scratch. This also happens sometimes even in the same chat.
This makes any serious long-term creative work extremely difficult.

Main issues:
• No persistent memory between sessions
• Unreliable context even in the same chat
• Heavy limitations in voice mode
• No easy way to export full conversations

Please fix the memory system and add proper chat export.
