Boots: Ordering and Breaking Them In

One of the most important pieces of gear you'll bring to VMI is your boots. Taking the time to prepare them properly can make a big difference during Matriculation Week.

🥾 Order Early — Make sure you're ordering the correct boots and the correct size. Don't wait until the last minute.

🚶 Break Them In — Start wearing your boots before arriving on post. Short walks and everyday wear can help your feet adjust and soften the boots.

🩹 Prevent Blisters — Hot spots and blisters can quickly become a problem. Gradually increase wear time and address any discomfort early.

🧦 Choose the Right Socks — Quality athletic or hiking socks can improve comfort, reduce friction, and help keep your feet dry during long days on your feet.

💡 Incoming rats: Don't wait until Matriculation Week to wear your boots for the first time. A little preparation now can save a lot of discomfort later.

Coast Guard Auxiliary University Program

VMI is home to one of the nation's distinctive opportunities for cadets interested in maritime service, leadership, and public safety: the Coast Guard Auxiliary University Program (AUP).

Through the program, cadets gain experience in maritime safety, emergency preparedness, leadership, and public service while working alongside members of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary.

Participants have opportunities to develop skills in areas such as boating safety, search and rescue support, emergency management, and community outreach while building leadership experience that complements the VMI cadetship.

The program offers a unique pathway for cadets interested in serving their communities, supporting maritime missions, and exploring future opportunities with the Coast Guard and related fields.

For those drawn to maritime service and helping others, the Coast Guard Auxiliary University Program offers a distinctive way to lead and serve.
