Tariffs are simply taxes. Conservatives once united against new taxes. Taxing trade will mean less trade and higher prices.

U.S.-imposed tariffs are taxes and also a form of regulation, borne mainly by American businesses and ultimately by American consumers. If you want to help Americans, then you need to reduce taxes and regulations, not increase them.
