This year's El Nino, or "little boy", looks like being a monster. Ocean temperatures are forecast to rise by 4C, the largest in at least 1000 years. Climate scientists warn of a string of weather catastrophes around the world and 450,000 excess deaths, while Australians are at greater risk of facing deadly heat, drought and bushfires than usual during this year's extreme weather season.

While every effort must be made to keep fossil fuels in the ground and electrify Australia with cheap, clean energy, we must also prepare our communities. Owning a pet is linked to a brain that looks up to 15 years younger. A University of Alabama study scanned 95 adults and found that pet owners had better memory, faster thinking, and bigger brain structures, especially dog owners.

Fifty-six pet owners and 39 people without pets, aged 20 to 74, took thinking tests and got brain scans. Ian McDonough's team published the study in Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience in 2022.

Pet owners thought faster, shifted their attention more easily, and remembered stories better. Their brains looked up to 15 years younger compared with typical scans for their age, and the effects were largest in dog owners. The researchers expected pets to help through better mood, social life, or physical health, but those things didn't explain the results.

Older adults who owned more than one pet showed even more benefit than those with one or none. The researchers suspect each animal adds its own needs and habits to keep track of, which could give an aging brain extra daily work. With 95 people tested once, the study can't rule out that people with healthier brains are simply more likely to own pets. Australia’s political lobbying rules are broken. Nearly two-thirds of registered lobbyists in Canberra are former government representatives - former ministers, advisers or party officials. These are people who’ve spent years building relationships and gathering knowledge on the public purse, and are now able to sell access to the highest bidder.

Next month, I’ll introduce my National Lobbying Act as part of an effort to put a stop to this and to clean up politics. It would create a lobbyist register capturing both in-house corporate lobbyists and industry associations, while also closing the revolving door through enforceable bans on former ministers cashing in on their contacts.

Australians don’t send politicians to Canberra to protect big coal, big gambling, or the big banks. They send us there to stand up for our communities and act in their best interests. It’s time to clean up politics.
