Finally caught I Love Boosters today. More movies like this, please! @BootsRiley always delivers. Endless imagination/creative vision, great performances across the board, and stories that entertain while challenging the comfort of our status quo. See it in a theater if you can.
A few folks told me I needed to post this on twitter, so returning here briefly to tell @BootsRiley that I loved #ILoveBoosters so much that I had to draw it.
oh nice they posted "the elephant" on youtube!
i directed the last third of the film.
theres also a behind the scenes video afterwards that explains why the film is the way it is. it was a weird project, but im really grateful to have been involved.
hope you're doing alright.
I Love Boosters (🌟🌟🌟🌟) really impressed me & turned out to be extremely worthy of a trip to the theater. I don’t think you should wait to see this on streaming, I think you should get off your ass and see this in a crowded theater like I did this morning. I spent four of the most formative years of my life in the Bay Area & this film, directed by Boots Riley, captures the spirit of the Bay beautifully through a highly entertaining crime thriller. I Love Boosters does not play by any rules & I wish more films would do the same.
Keke Palmer plays Corvette, the leader of the Velvet Gang which consists of Mariah (Taylour Paige) and Sade (Naomi Ackie). The idea here is that the Velvet Gang survives by breaking in & stealing luxurious, high-end designer clothing- only to resell them to normal human beings who can actually afford the absurdly priced clothing, albeit at a heavy discount. Their whole motto is the “three F’s”: fashion-forward-philanthropy. I sort of viewed Corvette & the Velvet Gang as Riley’s take on Robin Hood & his Merry Men: steal from the rich & provide to the poor. But the core conflict/crux/fulcrum of the story is when the Velvet Gang zeroes in on a fashion icon named Christie Smith (Demi Moore), who just so happens to have stolen one of Corvette’s designs.
The performances from Palmer, Paige & Ackie make this film. I absolutely loved spending time with these three- I thought their chemistry felt real, totally authentic & never once forced. When you have this sort of on-screen chemistry between your three leads, you can have them do almost anything & the likelihood of success ensuing will skyrocket. Such is the case here- not only do these three women literally do anything & everything, it’s their relationship as a trio that makes this movie something special. Palmer has long been a reliable actor who never ceases to me amaze me- she can slip into a film in a supporting role or carry a film as its lead, like she does in this film. Taylour Paige’s charisma on-screen was totally effortless. And Naomi Ackie continues to impress me on two fronts: her choices as an actor & the actual performances she gives. Ackie keeps popping up in some of my favorite films over the last 3 years, this is another notch in her belt.
The story here has a lot of heart. I think behind the humor, wise-cracking jokes, and satire is a deep meditation on how absurd the wealth gap has become in today’s world. It’s defining nearly every corner of our society. One thread of the story that really stuck with me is that we learn as the movie goes on that Moore’s Christie Smith, who is a billionaire, has impacted the lives of countless individuals from different corners of the earth- not just The Bay Area. Smith isn’t just fucking over the Velvet Gang- she’s fucking over strangers from thousands of miles away. It’s the “we are all being fucked into deep submission by a billionaire” that unites nearly every character in this story. And as I always say- character is plot.
There are a number of reasons I think you should see this film & a number of excellent actors who pop up along the way (Will Poulter, LaKeith Stanfield, Don Cheadle). But the vision from director Boots Riley is but another reason this movie impressed me. As I mentioned in my opener, this film doesn’t play by any rules. Riley pulls out a lot of interesting techniques & practical effects throughout the telling of this story. It keeps you on your toes as an audience & it’s totally endearing considering we live in a world infested by AI. This movie was creative, man-made filmmaking.
Get your ass to the theater & see this film!
In celebration of 'I LOVE BOOSTERS,' NEON partnered with artist Cian Moore on an art installation called ‘Trickle Down Boosting,’ which blends the artistry of the film and its themes.
The art installation is currently on display at AMC Empire in NYC.
