ज्यादातर समय स्मोकिंग जोन में गुजरा। वह बन्द रूम नही था, खुली बालकनी थी। आप प्लेन को आते जाते, उड़ते उतरते देख सकते थे। ��ाइड में मॉकटेल काउंटर भी था। परफेक्ट..

माचिस सिक्युरिटी चेक के समय जपत हो चुकी थी। वहां हीटर भी न दिखा। जाहिर है, दीप से दीप जलाना ही एकमात्र तरीका था। लेकिन किसको कहोग��??

जाहिर है, अपनी जैसी शक्लो सूरत वाले से। मांगा, उसने दिया। दीप जलाकर बगल ही मैं बैठ गया। मुंह खोलते ही पता चल गया-पाकिस्तानी है।

पंजाबी एक्सेंट में बात कर रहा था। मर्चेंट नेवी में था। घर जा रहा था। अंग्रेजी और हिंदी (पाकी उर्दू टाइप) में एकदम फ़्लूएंट। मगर अंग्रेजी जल्द ही त्याग कर हम औकात पर आ गए।

तो बात गजलो पर गयी। उसके मर्चेंट नेवी के अनुभवों पर गयी। मुरी और मुअन जोदाड़ो पर गई। दोनो जगहें उसकी घूमी हुई थी। क्रिकेट, कराची के उसके घर, परिवार पर गयी।

इतनी अच्छी भाषा मे बात कर रहा था, मन करे कि बस बोलने दो, सुनते रहो। ज्यादातर उसने ही बोला। हम साइड के बार मे बैठे। खाते पीते बात करते रहे। मैने वालेट निक���ला। उसने धीमे से हाथ पर हाथ रखकर रोक दिया, और अपना वॉलेट निकाल कर पमेन्ट किया।

बीवी लाउंज में थी। उधर भी देखना था। सो मैं लौट गया। एक डेढ़ घण्टे बाद फिर चल पड़ा। वो दिखा। हाथ हिलाया।

कुछ कहने की जरूरत नही थी। दोनो चले उसी बालकनी की तरफ। फिर बातें शुरू हो गयी। पर अब उसका फ्लाइट टाइम करीब था। उसने हाथ मिलाया। चला गया।

मैं भी बीवी की तरफ लौट गया।

घण्टे डेढ़ घण्टे बाद फिर गया। इस बार अकेला था। सिगरेट में स्वाद नही आया। फेंककर लौटा, तो फिर नही गया।

उसका चेहरा हल्का सा याद है। मेरा नाम नही पूछा उसने, न मैनें उसका। पूरे वक्त वो पाकिस्तान था, मैं हिंदुस्तान था। यही पहचान थी। मगर दुश्मनी की कोई खलिश नही। बस क्यूरियोसिटी थी।

पूरे वक्त मैं उससे ज्यादा विनम्र, अधिक केयरिंग होने की कोशिश में था। ��र सच यह कि उसने यह प्रतियोगिता बड़े अंतर से जीती थी।

सीमाओं के भीतर बनाया गया बनावटी माहौल, देश से बाहर जाते ही स्वतः विलीन हो जाता है। सच यही है कि भारत और पाकिस्तान के बीच की सीमाएँ, चाहें जमीन पर हों या दिल पर। ये कृत्रिम है, अनचाही हैं, दूसरों के द्वारा जबरन उकेरी गई है।

आप कितने भी कट्टर हों, मैं दावा कर सकता हूँ कि जब किसी सीमा पार वाले से मिलेंगे, नजरें मिलाकर स्माइल कर देंगे, वो आपके कंधे पर हाथ रख देगा। जेहन में बरसो से खिंची लकीरें घुल जाएंगी।

आप नीरज हो जायेगे।
