මෑතකදී මම එංගලන්තෙ ඉන්දැද්දී ලංකාවට පොතක් තැපැල් කරන්න ලන්ඩන්වල තැපැල් කන්තෝරුවකට ගියා.

ගිහින් පොත රෙජිස්ටර් තැපෑලට දාන්න යද්දී එතන කවුන්ටරේ හිටපු සුද්දා කිව්වා

"ඕක රෙජිස්ටර් කළොත් නැති වෙයි. ඒ නිසා සාමාන්‍ය තැපෑලට දාන්න." කියලා.

මම අන්ද මන්ද වෙලා සුද්දගෙන් ඇහුවා ඒ මොකද කියලා. ඒ පාර සුද්දා කියපි

"රෙජිස්ටර් කළාම ලංකාවේ තැපෑලේ වැඩ කරන අය හිතනවා ඕක ඇතුළේ වටිනා මොනවා හරි ඇති කියලා. ඊට පස්සේ ඕක කඩලා බලනවා. ඊට පස්සේ විසි කරලා දානවා. ඔය වගේ නැතිවෙන පාර්සල් පිළිබඳ පැමිණිලි විශාල ප්‍රමාණයක් අපට නිරන්තරයෙන් ලැබෙනවා" කියලා.

මම ඉතිං ඒක අහලා ලාංකිකයෙක් වශයෙන් විලියෙන් ඇඹරුණා!

ඔය වගේ කතාවක් දවසක් මට ඔස්ට්‍රේලියන් තැපෑලෙනුත් කිව්වා. ලංකාවට යවන්න ලෑස්ති කරපු පොඩි පාර්සලයක් රෙජිස්ටර් කරන්න ගියාම කවුන්ටරයේ හිටපු සුද්දි කිව්වා අපි ඕකේ වගකීම බාර ගන්නේ ඔස්ට්‍රේලියාවෙන් ඕක පිට වෙනකං විතරයි කියලා.

ඒ වගේම මම ඔස්ට්‍රේලියාවට ආපු මුල් දවස්වල ලංකාවේ හිටපු මගේ නෑදෑ වෙන කුඩා දරුවන්ට යවපු උපන්දින සුබ පැතුම් පත් එකක්වත් එයාලට ලැබිලා තිබුණේ නෑ. පස්සේ හොයලා බැලුවම දැනගන්න ලැබුණා කාඩ් එක ඇතුළේ ඩොලර් නෝට්ටු ඇති කියලා හිතලා, ලංකාවේ තැපෑලේ අය ඒවා කඩලා බලනවයි කියලා. ඊට පස්සේ කවදාවත් මම ලංකාවට උපන් දින සුබ පැතුම්පත් යැව්වේ නෑ.

කොහොම හරි ආපහු පොතේ කතාවට ආවොත්, එංගලන්ත තැපෑලේ සුද්දා කියපු විදිහටම මම අර පොත සාමාන්‍ය තැපෑලට දැම්මා. මාසෙකට පස්සේ ඊයේ යාන්තං ඒක අදාළ පුද්ගලයාට ලැබී තිබුණා!

ඉතිං උඹලා හිතනවා නං අලුත් පක්ෂයකට ඡන්දෙ දීලා බලයට රැගෙන ආ පමණින්ම හරි පාර්ලිමේන්තුවේ දැන් ඉන්න 225ම පැන්නුවම හරි ල���කාව ඔ���ෝ හැදෙනවා කියලා, උඹලගෙ මොළේ පරීක්ෂා කර ගනිල්ලා.

මොකද ඔය අලුත් පක්ෂෙක වුණත් ඉන්නෙත්, ඒකට ඡන්දෙ දෙන්නෙත්, ඊළඟ ඡන්දෙන් පාර්ලිමේන්තඅවට පත් වෙන්නෙත් ඔය ලංකා තැපෑලෙම ඉන්න ජනතාවම නිසා!

This gentleman has been in the cinnamon industry for the past 50+ years and knows a cinnamon bark like the back of his hand. But, it’s his story that is amazing.

He lives by himself on one of the islands located on Madu Ganga lake. He believes that cinnamon can help cure a variety of different ailments, and credits cinnamon for keeping him fit and agile at a ripe old age of 81. But, what truly amazed me was his adaptation.

Once he realized that foreigners loved to visit Madu Ganga, and wanted to know more about cinnamon, he took it upon himself to prepare a “session” of sorts that gives anyone a lot of valuable information about cinnamon cultivation and the spice itself. He first welcomes you with a steaming hot cup of cinnamon tea (which tastes amazing), then shows you different types of cinnamon barks; how they are dried in the traditional way; and finally skillfully scrapes of a bark to show how cinnamon is made.

He is paid by the boat operators who bring groups of tourists to his little mini island. In addition to that, he also sells small packs of cinnamon, and other tiny cinnamon based souvenirs. He also makes money through tips that foreigners leave him after the session is over.

Since he has started doing these demonstrations over 15 years ago, he is now able to converse in 7 languages! Such an inspiring story, and I strive to be as passionate and dedicated as this individual is to cinnamon, to everything I do.
