On this day a year ago September 25, 2025 🕊 ✊🏼: Remembering a great comrade, a brilliant and revolutionary woman; Assata Olugbala Shakur.

Assata Shakur rejected her birth name - JoAnne Chesimard as a "slave name". She called it a slave name. According to her, Assata is a West African name, derived from Aisha, said to mean "she who struggles", while Shakur means "thankful one" in Arabic. Olugbala means "savior" in Yoruba.

Until her natural demise in Havana, Assata Olugbala Shakur continued to identify as African first even though she never stepped a foot in Africa:

"It sounded so strange when people called me JoAnne. It really had nothing to do with me and my African heritage. I didn't feel like no JoAnne, or no Negro, or no amerikan. I felt like an African woman when i am called Assata Shakur Olugbala."
