Otherwise "free" markets were still able to discriminate based on race until the big, bad federal government - not markets - had to make them stop and extend economic and civil rights to African Americans.

I guess if you don’t have interest or belief in civil liberties generally, then the free market can exist independently of freedom of religion. If you care what people like Jefferson and Madison believed, then you’d know they not only saw economic independence as necessary to preserve other freedoms, but saw all of the freedoms as existing in interdependent fashion, making it necessary to constantly protect all of them. That’s why the U.S. government is designed primarily to protect rights. That includes property as well as beliefs - they didn’t really distinguish between the two. Madison even said a person had “property” in “his religious opinions.”

@mtaibbi My last section is written poorly: what I argued is that giving large, private corporations a bunch of money, a large chunk of which goes to CEOs, is obviously less effencient and more expensive than the government just running the industry itself.
