🇯🇵 I’m Japanese.
I have a difficult but sincere question for Americans. 🇺🇸
On August 6 and 9, 1945, the United States dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
The explosions killed tens of thousands of people and devastated both cities.
But the suffering didn’t end in 1945.
Survivors continued to suffer from radiation-related illnesses, including leukemia and other cancers, for decades.
As a Japanese person, there is something I’ve always wanted to ask.
Do you believe American leaders fully understood the devastating power of atomic bombs before dropping them on Hiroshima and Nagasaki?
Did they understand only the immediate destruction?
Or did they also anticipate the long-term suffering caused by radiation?
Scientists already knew radiation was dangerous, but its full long-term effects on survivors were not yet understood.
If American leaders had known the full human consequences, do you think they would have made the same decision?
I’m not asking Americans today to feel guilty.
I simply want to understand the decisions of the past so that future generations never have to experience such suffering again.
Please share your honest thoughts. 🇯🇵🤝🇺🇸🕊️
