โMarie, why should I go see I Love Boosters?โ
It is hard to tell you without spoiling much of it for you. But isnโt it fun to go see a movie that can be so spoiled because of all of its good parts?
1. The film is a fully-realized, textured, layered, magical world while also being rooted in reality and the current pressures we are all facing. There is not a moment on screen you are not visually intrigued then satisfied. The buildup of conversation is steady and intentional until you are right there with everyone.
2. The film is playful, FUNNY, camp, magical, escapist and fucking fun. This makes it unlike anything that has come out this year or that will come out later this year.
3. The cast is perfect. Everyone is adorable. Everyone is on their game. Everyone does such a beautiful job of propelling the film forward without ever feeling out of place.
4. COSTUMES oh what fucking fun!!! Costumes that are vibrant and alive, that have something to say and that are reflective of the characters and their moments.
5. PRACTICAL EFFECTS in a world of AI slop and lazy CGI, we get stop motion animation. We get onset color saturation. We get new camera lenses.
6. TuneYards main theme is so fun.
It also reminds me a lot of a couple different genres of jaw harp-centric folk music which are associated with travelers, outsiders and rebels across the globe. The people who exist and carry their culture and joy on outside of a system, resulting in this cartoonish, expressive sound.
7. THE PEOPLE WHO MADE THIS MOVIE FUCKING CARE ABOUT MAKING MOVIES SO FUCKING MUCH. THEY FUCKING CARE AND DONโT YOU WANT TO SUPPORT THINGS MADE BY PEOPLE WHO ACTUALLY FUCKING CARE?
8. Riley trusts you as a viewer to piece together what is going on and to find your own path to connect with this message. So many films waste so much time spoon feeding everything to everyone now and twisting themselves in knots, trying to appease the median viewer.
Again, I cannot say much about an evening without spoiling the film, but there are a few instances this is incredibly obvious.
9. Like his other works @BootsRiley creates a magical surrealist world that is focused on helping you the viewer dream your way out of harmful and oppressive systems via holistic consideration vs perpetuation of empirical hierarchy.
To get more pinpointed, this is a work of expressionist Afro-surrealism, which is a genre that pins itself on the acknowledgment that the horrific yet absurd violence Black folks within white supremacist systems can be faced by taking up space and creating their own magical, metaphorical, and community-driven spaces/art via surrealist dreaming and problem solving.
Essentially asking if โtheyโ can make up all of these horrors, why canโt we reclaim our existence through our own dreaming?
Riley is skilled enough and cares so deeply that he wants everybody in on the ride because this now an anti-capitalist engagement. This is a work that acknowledges the boot is on all of the working class while also still giving space to and having a conversation about hierarchical harm and manipulation.
Again, I canโt say anything without ruining the movie, but you might be wondering as youโre watching why certain actions are not found and it is because they would be a perpetuation of hierarchical oppression versus a reparative state.
@MoMo_Lee52 It can be a bit complicated case by case. Unless someone is trying to get one over on someone.
I assume it's 2+people with similar followings ( or friends) splitting the shared cost of shooting content ( location and food and if it's over several days) and split the content.
@GoddessBats I tend to give people a lot of grace when they have a large following ( dms likely flooded) and how bad social media has gotten recently.
It's also frustrating when their accounts get banned and that was my only way of contacting them.
