The twist is actually sadder than just saying “she should’ve read his mind.” Metzger really didn’t know what V-Max meant. When Peter asked him, he was actually telling the truth for once. So even if Jean had read his mind, it wouldn’t have helped because there was nothing there.

Sara wasn’t leaving a secret clue. She was just saying the last thing she saw before she died. a damaged vent with a label that said “Ventmax.” That’s all it was. Jean spent the whole movie thinking it was an important message from her sister, but in the end, it meant nothing. Just a broken sign. And somehow, that makes it even more emotional.
