The agreement is not a renewal of the original 1951 agreement
This new deal adds things that weren't in the original: the "no adversary" veto clause (blocking China/Russia from any base, presence, or sensitive investment without U.S. sign-off), "permanent"/"Infinite Life" framing rather than a standard renewable treaty, and an explicit commitment to build out a large new military presence.
Denmark has agreed to it and signing is expected next week.

In addition to the above;
“Infinite Life"/permanence framing the 1951 pact was already indefinite (tied to NATO's duration), but this new deal explicitly brands itself as having "no end," which is more a rhetorical/political framing than a new legal mechanism, since the original was already open-ended.
No-cost commitment — Trump stated explicitly "There will be NO COST to the United States," a financial term not part of the original pact.

Here’s what the Trump administration secured:
•"Permanent" security control — Trump says the U.S. now has permanent control over security "and all other needs" in Greenland.
•No-cost arrangement — Trump stated there will be "NO COST to the United States" for this expanded authority.
•Adversary veto power — No U.S. adversary (implicitly China, Russia) can ever base forces, maintain a military presence, or make "sensitive investments" in Greenland without express U.S. approval.
•Expanded military footprint — The U.S. will "immediately begin" developing a large military presence in Greenland, in cooperation with Greenlanders on development and construction.
•"Infinite Life" framing — Trump described the deal as having no end date, distinguishing it from a standard renewable treaty.
•NATO alignment — Framed as part of a broader Arctic security push, building on earlier framework talks with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
