The First Filipino to be Ranked by the @WTA

Many will likely be surprised that it’s not Alex Eala.

Time to give @DYANCASTILLEJO (yes the same Dyan covering Eala all over the world) her flowers.

Dyan Castillejo was the 1st ever Filipino to be ranked by the @WTA.

She reached a career-high world ranking of No. 403 in singles and No. 245 in doubles.

She achieved both of these milestone ranks in 1986, cementing her place in history as the very first Filipina tennis player to break into the official WTA Tour rankings

Currently, Castillejo-Garcia is a prominent Filipino sports journalist and former professional tennis player. She is widely recognized as a pioneering figure in Philippine sports broadcasting and is historically one of the country's top female tennis athletes.

Tennis Career

Before entering media, Castillejo was a trailblazer on the tennis court. Her athletic achievements include:

•WTA Ranking: She was the first-ever Filipino to earn a official Women's Tennis Association (WTA) ranking.

•National Representation: She represented the Philippines in the Billie Jean King Cup (formerly the Fed Cup) from 1981 to 1990.

•Fed Cup Commitment Award: In 2017, she became the first Filipino to receive this prestigious distinction from the International Tennis Federation for playing in at least 40 ties.

•International Tournaments: She competed globally in major tournaments including the Asian Games, Southeast Asian (SEA) Games, Junior Wimbledon, and the Junior US Open.

As an international competitor, Dyan Castillejo’s most notable competitive winsoccurred while representing the Philippines at the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games and during her decade-long tenure in the Fed Cup (now the Billie Jean King Cup).

Because she played in an era before local players frequently won open-era global WTA titles, her career wins are highlighted by her consistency and medal-winning performances on the regional stage.
