I got in the middle and translated English/Spanish until they left him alone. Then the man told me he was Mayan and taught me a few words in his first language. I hadn't realized at the time how strong the Mayan culture still is. Such a cool guy and a fascinating conversation.

@sersyncope @adribbleofink Right now I'm not writing much (kids aren't doing well post-pandemic). But I'm hoping when they finish high school, I can start writing seriously again. For now it's write when I can, don't when it's too much, and be at peace with that as best I can.

@adribbleofink Spouse has a stable income with insurance. I was a high school teacher, then when we became foster parents, I quit and did odd jobs part time (copy editing, scheduler at massage studio, front desk at law firm, etc). Now we have kids in HS, and I'm teaching middle school.

@TheTinaVasquez Growing up, every time I told someone in my small town that I wanted to go to the University of Texas, I got told it would ruin me, or something to that effect. Sure enough, I went to UT and changed a lot, but I'm so thankful I did.

@lyssasphere Well, yeah, unless you want them educated by their peers, the internet, and any sexual predator who takes an interest. It doesn't have to be salacious. Kids handle technical info well.

@cbrotherswriter I feel guilty sometimes, but I'm not sure the stress and general frustration would make for pleasant family time. I'd rather have fewer but happier meals together.

@cbrotherswriter We used to do them almost every night, but now we're at once a week. Scott and I both work full time and the kids are busy too. I'd like to up it to twice a week, but I don't see a return to almost every night ever happening again.
